About Weezer

Weezer is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1992, and for more than three decades they have been one of alternative rock's most distinctive acts. The lineup since 2001 pairs Rivers Cuomo's lead vocals and guitar with Patrick Wilson on drums, Brian Bell on guitar and backing vocals, and Scott Shriner on bass. Their signature sound is power pop with loud guitars and enormous hooks, what Bell once described as the Beach Boys with Marshall stacks. It is a formula that has sold over 35 million albums worldwide, including 10 million in the United States.

After signing with Geffen Records in 1993, Weezer recorded their self-titled 1994 debut with producer Ric Ocasek. Known forever as the Blue Album, it went five-times-platinum on the strength of singles like Buddy Holly, Say It Ain't So, and Undone - The Sweater Song, and Rolling Stone later ranked it among the 500 greatest albums of all time. The darker Pinkerton (1996) sold poorly at first, then became one of rock's great fan-driven reassessments, eventually earning platinum certification and credit as a cornerstone of 2000s emo. The pop-leaning Green Album relaunched the band in 2001, Beverly Hills gave Weezer their first Billboard Hot 100 top ten single in 2005, and Pork and Beans topped the Modern Rock chart for 11 weeks in 2008. The band has kept reinventing ever since, from the Teal Album of covers, sparked by their smash version of Toto's Africa, to the orchestral OK Human and the hard-rocking Van Weezer (both 2021), the four-season SZNZ project (2022), and their twentieth studio album, the Gold Album (2026).

A Weezer concert is a singalong from the first riff, and that crowd energy is a big part of the appeal of Weezer tickets. The band has played everything from Japan's Fuji Rock Festival and the Vans Warped Tour to Bonnaroo and Reading and Leeds, and co-headlined the 2021 Hella Mega Tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy. In 2024 they played the Blue Album front to back on the Voyage to the Blue Planet tour for its 30th anniversary, with Dinosaur Jr. and The Flaming Lips as openers. Reviewing a 2024 London arena show, The Guardian praised their taut, punchy, witty power pop and a band still patently in love with music.

Who are the members of Weezer?

Weezer's lineup has been stable since 2001. Rivers Cuomo, the frontman and chief songwriter, sings lead and plays guitar and keyboards, a role he has held since co-founding the band in Los Angeles in 1992. Patrick Wilson has been the drummer from the start, Brian Bell joined on guitar and backing vocals in 1993, and Scott Shriner took over on bass in 2001. Founding bassist Matt Sharp played from 1992 to 1998, Mikey Welsh held the spot from 1998 to 2001, and Jason Cropper played guitar in the original lineup. Karl Koch, the band's longtime assistant and archivist, is affectionately considered Weezer's unofficial fifth member.

What are Weezer's most popular songs?

Buddy Holly, Say It Ain't So, and Island in the Sun are the songs Weezer crowds know word for word, but the catalog runs deep across every era of the band.
  • Buddy Holly (1994), whose Spike Jonze video won four MTV Video Music Awards
  • Undone - The Sweater Song (1994), the debut single that broke Weezer on MTV
  • Say It Ain't So (1994), later named one of the best songs of the 1990s by Pitchfork
  • Island in the Sun (2001), one of the band's biggest radio hits worldwide
  • Hash Pipe (2001), a number two hit on Billboard's Modern Rock chart
  • Beverly Hills (2005), Weezer's first top ten single on the Billboard Hot 100
  • Pork and Beans (2008), which topped the Modern Rock chart for 11 weeks
  • Africa (2018), the Toto cover that hit number one on the Alternative Songs chart

What awards has Weezer won?

Weezer has won one Grammy Award and five MTV Video Music Awards across more than three decades of recording.
  • Grammy Award: Best Music Video for Pork and Beans (2009), out of five career nominations spanning Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album.
  • MTV Video Music Awards: five wins from eight nominations. The Buddy Holly video alone took four in 1995, including Breakthrough Video and Best Alternative Video.
  • Guinness World Records: five records set during the making of the Troublemaker video in 2008.

What is Weezer's fan culture like?

Weezer has sustained a devoted cult following since the 1990s, and it spans generations, from fans who wore out the Blue Album in 1994 to major artists who grew up on it. That loyalty reshaped the band's own story once: Pinkerton was dismissed on release, but fans championed it until a 2002 Rolling Stone readers poll named it one of the greatest albums of all time. The relationship runs both ways. A persistent social media campaign by fans convinced the band to record Africa, the 2008 Hootenanny Tour invited fans to bring their own instruments and play along, and Rivers Cuomo has released thousands of unreleased demos and songs directly to the fanbase. The band's reach shows up in the crowd as well. Paramore, Fall Out Boy, Blink-182, Panic! at the Disco, Taylor Swift, and Olivia Rodrigo have all cited Weezer as an influence, which is a big reason Weezer tickets draw one of the more cross-generational crowds in rock.
