Weezer is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1992, and for more than three decades they have been one of alternative rock's most distinctive acts. The lineup since 2001 pairs Rivers Cuomo's lead vocals and guitar with Patrick Wilson on drums, Brian Bell on guitar and backing vocals, and Scott Shriner on bass. Their signature sound is power pop with loud guitars and enormous hooks, what Bell once described as the Beach Boys with Marshall stacks. It is a formula that has sold over 35 million albums worldwide, including 10 million in the United States.
After signing with Geffen Records in 1993, Weezer recorded their self-titled 1994 debut with producer Ric Ocasek. Known forever as the Blue Album, it went five-times-platinum on the strength of singles like Buddy Holly, Say It Ain't So, and Undone - The Sweater Song, and Rolling Stone later ranked it among the 500 greatest albums of all time. The darker Pinkerton (1996) sold poorly at first, then became one of rock's great fan-driven reassessments, eventually earning platinum certification and credit as a cornerstone of 2000s emo. The pop-leaning Green Album relaunched the band in 2001, Beverly Hills gave Weezer their first Billboard Hot 100 top ten single in 2005, and Pork and Beans topped the Modern Rock chart for 11 weeks in 2008. The band has kept reinventing ever since, from the Teal Album of covers, sparked by their smash version of Toto's Africa, to the orchestral OK Human and the hard-rocking Van Weezer (both 2021), the four-season SZNZ project (2022), and their twentieth studio album, the Gold Album (2026).
A Weezer concert is a singalong from the first riff, and that crowd energy is a big part of the appeal of Weezer tickets. The band has played everything from Japan's Fuji Rock Festival and the Vans Warped Tour to Bonnaroo and Reading and Leeds, and co-headlined the 2021 Hella Mega Tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy. In 2024 they played the Blue Album front to back on the Voyage to the Blue Planet tour for its 30th anniversary, with Dinosaur Jr. and The Flaming Lips as openers. Reviewing a 2024 London arena show, The Guardian praised their taut, punchy, witty power pop and a band still patently in love with music.
