About Romeo Santos

Romeo Santos was born Anthony Santos on July 21, 1981, and raised in the Bronx by a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother. He got his start singing in a church choir and grew up on the salsa, merengue, and bachata his parents played around the house. In 1994 he formed a band with his cousin Henry and friends Lenny and Max Santos. Renamed Aventura, the group bent bachata toward hip hop and R&B, and the bet paid off. Their 2002 single "Obsesión" hit No. 1 in France, Germany, and Italy. In 2007 they became the first bachata act to sell out Madison Square Garden, and by 2009 they had performed at the White House.

Santos went solo in 2011, signing with Sony Music Latin and opening with "You," a debut single that climbed to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs and Tropical Airplay charts. "Promise," a duet with Usher, repeated the feat and later earned Diamond certification from the RIAA. His first solo album, Formula, Vol. 1, arrived in November 2011, and in February 2012 he sold out Madison Square Garden three nights in a row to open The King Stays King tour. The 2014 sequel, Formula, Vol. 2, became the best-selling Latin album of the year behind "Propuesta Indecente," which spent 125 weeks on the Hot Latin Songs chart, and "Odio," a Drake collaboration that held No. 1 for 13 weeks. That summer, he sold out two nights at Yankee Stadium as the first Latin artist to headline the ballpark.

The run never really slowed. Golden arrived in 2017, and Utopía followed in 2019 with Santos recording alongside the pioneers of traditional bachata. That September he became the first Latin artist to sell out MetLife Stadium. In 2022, Formula, Vol. 3 delivered collaborations with Justin Timberlake and Rosalía and won Best Merengue/Bachata Album at the 2023 Latin Grammys, his first win at the awards. He kept stretching in 2025 with Better Late Than Never, a joint album with Prince Royce. The numbers tell the story: seven No. 1 songs on the Hot Latin Songs chart, eighteen No. 1 hits on Tropical Airplay, and more than 24 million records sold worldwide, along with a nickname that has stuck ever since, the King of Modern Bachata.

Who is Romeo Santos?

Romeo Santos is a singer, songwriter, and record producer from the Bronx, dubbed the King of Modern Bachata for popularizing urban bachata, a style that fuses traditional Dominican bachata with hip hop and R&B. Born Anthony Santos on July 21, 1981, to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother, he rose to prominence as the lead vocalist and frontman of Aventura, one of the most influential Latin music bands of the 2000s, before going solo in 2011. The crown checks out: seven No. 1 songs on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and more than 24 million records sold worldwide make him one of the best-selling Latin music artists of all time.

What are Romeo Santos' most popular songs?

Romeo Santos' catalog splits between era-defining Aventura singles and solo hits that refused to leave the charts, with "Propuesta Indecente" standing as his most certified song and "Obsesión" the breakout that started it all.
  • "Obsesión" (Aventura, 2002): a No. 1 hit in France, Germany, and Italy that pushed bachata onto the world stage.
  • "Ella y Yo" (Aventura with Don Omar, 2005): a duet that lifted the group to another level.
  • "You" (2011): his debut solo single and a No. 1 on both Hot Latin Songs and Tropical Airplay.
  • "Promise" with Usher (2011): a No. 1 duet later certified Diamond by the RIAA.
  • "Propuesta Indecente" (2013): his most certified single, with 125 weeks on the Hot Latin Songs chart.
  • "Odio" with Drake (2014): a collaboration that spent 13 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs.
  • "Héroe Favorito" (2017): a Latin Airplay and Tropical Airplay No. 1 from the Golden era.
  • "Imitadora" (2017): a Tropical Airplay No. 1 from the same album.
  • "Inmortal" (Aventura reunion, 2019): a No. 1 on both Latin Airplay and Tropical Airplay.
  • "Sin Fin" with Justin Timberlake (2022): a pop crossover duet from Formula, Vol. 3.
Those songs form the backbone of his setlists, and hearing an entire arena sing them back is a major part of the draw for Romeo Santos tickets on every tour.

What awards has Romeo Santos won?

  • Lo Nuestro Award for Tropical Song of the Year, "Propuesta Indecente" (2014).
  • Videoclip Award for Best Bachata Video, "Imitadora" (2018).
  • Billboard Music Awards nomination for Best Latin Album, Golden (2018).
Beyond the trophies, the RIAA has certified "Promise" and "Odio" Diamond, with "Propuesta Indecente" certified 51× Platinum as the most certified song of his career.

What is Romeo Santos' fan culture like?

Romeo Santos has one of the most devoted fan bases in Latin music, and the attendance record backs it up. His marquee sellouts include:
  • Madison Square Garden, three nights in a row in February 2012 and again in February 2018.
  • Yankee Stadium, two sold-out nights in July 2014 that made him the first Latin artist to headline the ballpark.
  • MetLife Stadium in September 2019, the first time a Latin artist sold out the venue.
  • The National Stadium in Lima, Peru, four sold-out nights in February 2023.
  • The Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile, nine sold-out nights in March 2023 alone.
Aventura made bachata appealing to younger listeners, and that audience carried straight into his solo career, so his crowds span generations of bachata fans. The devotion shows up offstage too. When HBO promoted its King of Bachata documentary in 2021, it built a Washington Heights pop-up styled as a bodega, complete with free haircuts, Presidente beer, karaoke, and a lifelike hologram of Santos greeting fans. In late 2019, he played a free tour across towns and cities in the Dominican Republic. For plenty of fans one night is never enough, which is exactly how those multi-night sellouts happen, and why demand for Romeo Santos tickets runs especially deep in New York, the city where the streak started.
