Romeo Santos was born Anthony Santos on July 21, 1981, and raised in the Bronx by a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother. He got his start singing in a church choir and grew up on the salsa, merengue, and bachata his parents played around the house. In 1994 he formed a band with his cousin Henry and friends Lenny and Max Santos. Renamed Aventura, the group bent bachata toward hip hop and R&B, and the bet paid off. Their 2002 single "Obsesión" hit No. 1 in France, Germany, and Italy. In 2007 they became the first bachata act to sell out Madison Square Garden, and by 2009 they had performed at the White House.
Santos went solo in 2011, signing with Sony Music Latin and opening with "You," a debut single that climbed to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs and Tropical Airplay charts. "Promise," a duet with Usher, repeated the feat and later earned Diamond certification from the RIAA. His first solo album, Formula, Vol. 1, arrived in November 2011, and in February 2012 he sold out Madison Square Garden three nights in a row to open The King Stays King tour. The 2014 sequel, Formula, Vol. 2, became the best-selling Latin album of the year behind "Propuesta Indecente," which spent 125 weeks on the Hot Latin Songs chart, and "Odio," a Drake collaboration that held No. 1 for 13 weeks. That summer, he sold out two nights at Yankee Stadium as the first Latin artist to headline the ballpark.
The run never really slowed. Golden arrived in 2017, and Utopía followed in 2019 with Santos recording alongside the pioneers of traditional bachata. That September he became the first Latin artist to sell out MetLife Stadium. In 2022, Formula, Vol. 3 delivered collaborations with Justin Timberlake and Rosalía and won Best Merengue/Bachata Album at the 2023 Latin Grammys, his first win at the awards. He kept stretching in 2025 with Better Late Than Never, a joint album with Prince Royce. The numbers tell the story: seven No. 1 songs on the Hot Latin Songs chart, eighteen No. 1 hits on Tropical Airplay, and more than 24 million records sold worldwide, along with a nickname that has stuck ever since, the King of Modern Bachata.
