The Strokes are an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1998 and unchanged in lineup since their first shows. Julian Casablancas handles lead vocals and the bulk of the songwriting, with Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. on guitar, Nikolai Fraiture on bass, and Fabrizio Moretti on drums. The group became a defining act of the early-2000s garage rock and post-punk revival, taking the scrappy energy of downtown Manhattan and sharpening it into something taut, melodic, and unmistakably their own.
Their debut EP, The Modern Age, arrived in 2001 and triggered a bidding war before Is This It landed that same year and earned a permanent spot on countless greatest-albums lists. Room on Fire (2003) and First Impressions of Earth (2005) followed, then a multi-year hiatus gave way to Angles (2011) and Comedown Machine (2013). The New Abnormal (2020), produced by Rick Rubin, won Best Rock Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. A seventh album, Reality Awaits, arrived in 2026. Live, The Strokes trade on the same wiry guitars, deadpan croon, and deep catalog that built their reputation, moving between early favorites and newer material without missing a step.
