About The Chicks

The Chicks, formerly the Dixie Chicks, are a country band from Dallas, Texas, formed in 1989 by sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer with founding members Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy. They cut their teeth as a bluegrass act, busking and working the festival circuit for six years before Natalie Maines joined as lead vocalist in 1995 and the band signed with Monument Records. That move pushed the sound toward a mix of bluegrass instrumentation, mainstream country, blues, and pop, and it set the stage for the breakthrough that followed.

The commercial breakthrough came fast. Wide Open Spaces (1998) and Fly (1999) both earned RIAA diamond certification, making The Chicks the only country band and the only female band of any genre with back-to-back diamond albums. Fly debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and later albums Home (2002) and Taking the Long Way (2006) did the same, making the band the first female band in chart history with three albums to open at the top. Taking the Long Way, produced by Rick Rubin, featured all three members co-writing every track. The band went on hiatus in 2008, with Maguire and Strayer recording as the duo Court Yard Hounds, then returned to touring in 2016, shortened their name to The Chicks in 2020, and released Gaslighter that July, their first studio album in 14 years, produced by Jack Antonoff.

By July 2020, The Chicks had sold 33 million certified albums, making them the best-selling all-woman band and the best-selling country group since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. Their live show runs on real musicianship: Maguire moves between fiddle, mandolin, and viola, Strayer between banjo, Dobro, and guitar, and Maines fronts the trio on acoustic and electric guitar. That versatility has carried The Chicks tickets through every touring era, from the first headlining Fly Tour in 2000 to the DCX MMXVI World Tour in 2016 and 2017 and The Chicks Tour in 2022 and 2023, with shows across North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.

Who are the members of The Chicks?

The Chicks are a trio: Natalie Maines on lead vocals and guitar, Martie Maguire on fiddle, mandolin, and backing vocals, and Emily Strayer on banjo, Dobro, guitar, and backing vocals. Maguire and Strayer, who are sisters, founded the group in Dallas in 1989 as a four-piece with Laura Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy. Maines joined in 1995 on the recommendation of her father, multi-instrumentalist Lloyd Maines, who had played on the band's earlier albums, and the trio has recorded and toured together ever since.

What are The Chicks' most popular songs?

The Chicks have landed 22 songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, including six number one singles:
  • There's Your Trouble
  • Wide Open Spaces
  • You Were Mine
  • Cowboy Take Me Away
  • Without You
  • Travelin' Soldier
Other signature songs include the Fleetwood Mac cover Landslide, Long Time Gone, Ready to Run, the Grammy-winning Not Ready to Make Nice, and Gaslighter, the lead single from their 2020 album.

What awards have The Chicks won?

The Chicks have won 13 Grammy Awards, ten Country Music Association awards, and eight Academy of Country Music awards. The biggest highlights:
  • Album of the Year at the 2007 Grammy Awards, for Taking the Long Way
  • Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2007 Grammy Awards, for Not Ready to Make Nice
  • Best Country Album, four times, for Wide Open Spaces, Fly, Home, and Taking the Long Way
  • Entertainer of the Year from both the CMA and the ACM in 2000
  • CMA Vocal Group of the Year in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2002
Their 2007 Grammy night, when they won all five categories they were nominated in, produced the first three-award sweep of Album, Record, and Song of the Year in 14 years.

What is The Chicks' fan culture like?

The Chicks draw one of the widest audiences in country music, with fans spread across country, pop, and roots scenes and across three decades of albums. Wide Open Spaces appealed to many different listeners at once, a reach critics tied to a sound that stayed eclectic without turning exclusive. The band's Canadian following runs especially deep: Taking the Long Way went five-times platinum in Canada, and tours have repeatedly routed through Canadian cities. Collaborations like Soon You'll Get Better with Taylor Swift on her 2019 album Lover and a performance alongside Beyoncé at the 50th anniversary CMA Awards in 2016 show how far past the country aisle the Chicks' reach extends.
