Rod Stewart, born Roderick David Stewart in Highgate, North London, in 1945, built one of the longest-running careers in rock and pop. He started out in the early 1960s busking around London with a harmonica, then cycled through a string of bands, including Steampacket, Shotgun Express, the Jeff Beck Group, and Faces, before his solo work took over. That apprenticeship shaped the sound he became known for: a raspy, instantly recognizable voice wrapped around rock, folk, soul, and R&B.
His solo breakthrough arrived with 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story, which topped the charts in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia on the strength of "Maggie May." The 1972 follow-up Never a Dull Moment also hit number one in the UK and Australia. Through the rest of the 1970s he kept the momentum going with A Night on the Town, Foot Loose & Fancy Free, and Blondes Have More Fun, a run that produced "Tonight's the Night," "You're in My Heart," "Hot Legs," and "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?".
Stewart kept evolving after Faces broke up in 1975, moving through new wave and soft rock before turning to the Great American Songbook series in the 2000s. He has sold more than 120 million records worldwide, and his live shows continue to draw fans across generations.
