Ricardo Arjona, born Edgar Ricardo Arjona Morales on January 19, 1964, in Jocotenango, Guatemala, is one of the most successful Latin American singer-songwriters of all time, with more than 20 million records sold. He grew up mostly in Guatemala City, where he began his musical training, and at age twelve he won a children's music festival singing a song his father wrote. Music was not his only gift: he toured Central America with the Guatemala national basketball team and held the Guatemalan record for points in a single game, 79, until 2005. His debut album, Déjame Decir Que Te Amo, arrived in 1985 and made little commercial impact, and he went back to teaching school before his second album, Jesús, Verbo No Sustantivo, became a best-seller across Central America and brought him recognition across Latin America and the United States.
The breakthrough came after he joined Sony Music in 1990 and appeared on the Mexican telenovela Alcanzar una Estrella, which introduced him to audiences across Latin America. Animal Nocturno (1993) made him a star, and Historias (1994) turned him into a phenomenon, selling 2 million copies across Latin America behind songs like "Te Conozco" and "Señora De Las Cuatro Décadas". He never settled into one formula after that. Si El Norte Fuera El Sur took his songwriting beyond love songs into social commentary, and Billboard named it Rock Album of the Year in 1997. Galería Caribe (2000) leaned into Afro-Caribbean rhythms like bachata, merengue, and salsa, Santo Pecado (2002) brought symphonic balladry, Adentro (2005) began his partnership with producer Tommy Torres, and Poquita Ropa (2010) stripped the music down to near a cappella arrangements. In 2011 he founded his own label, Metamorfosis, and released Independiente, his fourth album to top Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart, which sold more than 4 million copies worldwide by the end of 2012. Billboard called him the most important artist in Latin pop to go independent.
His standing as a live draw matches the catalog. The live album Vivo was recorded in front of more than 100,000 people at the Hippodrome of Guatemala City in 1998. The Adentro Tour played to roughly two million fans, the Quinto Piso Tour ran 123 shows across 19 countries and won the 2010 Billboard Latin Music Award for Latin Tour of the Year, and the Metamorfosis World Tour added 102 shows in 18 countries. The releases have kept coming, from Viaje (2014) and Circo Soledad (2017) to Blanco (2020), Negro (2021), and Seco (2025). Fans weighing Ricardo Arjona tickets are looking at four decades of songwriting from an artist who has rebuilt his sound album after album.
