About Olivia Dean

Olivia Lauryn Dean was born on 14 March 1999 in the London Borough of Haringey and grew up in Highams Park, a multicultural suburb of northeast London. Music filled the house. Her mother, a devoted Lauryn Hill fan who passed that love along as Dean's middle name, introduced her to Jill Scott and Angie Stone, while her father spun Carole King and Al Green in the kitchen. Dean won a place at the BRIT School at fifteen, a highly selective free performing arts school in Croydon, where she moved from musical theatre to songwriting and convinced her mother to buy her a second-hand piano. She wrote her first songs at sixteen, teaching herself guitar and piano, and by seventeen she was busking on the South Bank.

Her first big break came as a backing vocalist for Rudimental, and her first show was no small thing: Sziget Festival in Hungary in 2017, in front of 16,000 people. In 2018 she self-released her debut single, "Reason to Stay", and when it gathered millions of streams, AMF Records and Virgin EMI Records signed her the next year. She built steadily from there with the EP OK Love You Bye, recorded in a converted pub in East London, followed by the EPs What Am I Gonna Do on Sundays? and Growth, plus recognition as Amazon Music's breakthrough artist of the year in 2021 and BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year in 2023. Her debut album, Messy, landed in June 2023, carried by the breakout single "Dive", and earned a place on the Mercury Prize shortlist.

Everything scaled up with The Art of Loving, released in September 2025. The album topped the UK Albums Chart, "Man I Need" became her first UK number 1 and reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Dean became the first female solo artist to hold four singles in the UK Top 10 at the same time. Her duet with Sam Fender, "Rein Me In", spent twenty-three weeks at number 1, the longest run in UK chart history. The live footprint grew just as fast, with Glastonbury sets in 2024 and a secret set in 2025, stadium support slots for Sam Fender at London Stadium and St James' Park, a run opening for Sabrina Carpenter on the Short n' Sweet Tour, and a Saturday Night Live appearance in November 2025. Billboard named her Rookie of the Year in January 2026, and she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist a month later, a rise that carried Olivia Dean tickets from small rooms to international headlining tours.

Who is Olivia Dean?

Olivia Dean is an English singer and songwriter from London who blends R&B, soul, pop, neo soul, and jazz into songs critics have described as heartbreak ballads and sing-along self-love anthems. Born in the London Borough of Haringey in 1999 and trained at the BRIT School, she spent her early career as a backing vocalist for Rudimental before her self-released single "Reason to Stay" earned her a record deal in 2019. Her debut album, Messy, made the Mercury Prize shortlist in 2023, and its follow-up, The Art of Loving, topped the UK Albums Chart and earned her the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2026. She names Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, Carole King, and Aretha Franklin among her influences and plays piano and guitar alongside her vocals.

What are Olivia Dean's most popular songs?

Olivia Dean's biggest songs range from her 2018 viral debut single to a record-setting duet.
  • "Reason to Stay", the 2018 self-released debut that pulled in millions of streams and led to her record deal
  • "Dive", the breakout single from her debut album, Messy
  • "Man I Need", her first UK number 1, which also reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100
  • "Nice to Each Other" and "So Easy (To Fall in Love)", the multi-platinum singles from The Art of Loving
  • "Rein Me In", her duet with Sam Fender, which spent twenty-three weeks at number 1 in the UK

What awards has Olivia Dean won?

Olivia Dean has won a Grammy Award, four Brit Awards, and a cluster of UK and international honors in a remarkably short stretch.
  • Grammy Award for Best New Artist, won in 2026
  • Four Brit Awards at the 2026 ceremony: British Artist of the Year, Best Pop Act, British Album of the Year for The Art of Loving, and Song of the Year for "Rein Me In"
  • Three MOBO Awards in 2026: Album of the Year, Song of the Year for "Man I Need", and Best Female Act
  • BET Award for Best New Artist in 2026
  • BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year in 2023
  • A Mercury Prize shortlist place for Messy in 2023

What is Olivia Dean's fan culture like?

Olivia Dean's fanbase was built show by show, starting with crowds as small as a handful of people. In 2020 she drove a bright yellow truck painted with her name around the UK, playing open-air sets that sometimes drew as few as five or ten attendees, and those early listeners formed the core of a following that grew with every release. Fans also know her personal markers: she is a lifelong West Ham United FC supporter who grew up attending games at Upton Park with her father, a season ticket holder, and she paid tribute to her grandmother with the song "Carmen" on Messy. She has been grouped with BRIT School friends and peers such as Raye in a wave of young British artists credited with bringing soul back into pop. Olivia Dean tickets have followed that growth, from the Messy Tour and Across the Atlantic to The Art of Loving Live, her announced headlining run across the United States and Europe.
