Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. on September 27, 1982, grew up in Hollygrove in New Orleans' 17th Ward and wrote his first rap at age eight. Label co-founder Birdman discovered him in 1993 and signed him to Cash Money Records at eleven, and by fourteen he was the youngest member of the Hot Boys alongside Juvenile, B.G., and Turk. The group's 1999 album Guerrilla Warfare hit number one on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number five on the Billboard 200, putting teenage Wayne on the national map.
His 1999 solo debut, Tha Block Is Hot, reached number three on the Billboard 200 and went platinum within a month, all before he turned eighteen. After follow-ups Lights Out and 500 Degreez, he rewired the mixtape circuit with Dedication 2 and Da Drought 3, a run Rolling Stone ranked among the best albums of 2007. Then came the Carter era: Tha Carter (2004) and Tha Carter II (2005) both cracked the top five of the Billboard 200, and Tha Carter III (2008) cleared one million copies in its first week, the first album to do so since 2005, on its way to becoming the best-selling album of 2008. "Lollipop" became his first Billboard Hot 100 number one, with "A Milli" and "Got Money" following it up the chart.
The run never really stopped. Tha Carter IV (2011) opened at number one with 964,000 first-week copies, Tha Carter V (2018) repeated the feat with every one of its songs charting on the Billboard Hot 100, and Funeral (2020) became his fifth album to top the Billboard 200 before Tha Carter VI arrived in 2025. Along the way he has sold more than 120 million records worldwide and built Young Money Entertainment, the label he founded in 2005 that signed Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Tyga. Few live acts bridge eras the way Lil Wayne does, and tickets for his shows tend to draw that full span, from mixtape-era devotees to fans who arrived through the artists he signed.
