About Journey

Journey is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1973 by former members of Santana and the Steve Miller Band. Originally called the Golden Gate Rhythm Section, the group started as a progressive rock and jazz fusion outfit built around guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Gregg Rolie. The addition of vocalist Steve Perry in 1977 reshaped the band's sound toward the arena rock and pop-driven anthems that would define their commercial peak. With keyboardist Jonathan Cain joining in 1980, Journey entered a run of albums and tours that made them one of the most successful rock acts of the early 1980s.

Journey's seventh album, Escape, reached number one on the Billboard 200 in 1981 and produced four hit singles, including Don't Stop Believin' and Open Arms. Don't Stop Believin' went on to earn 18x platinum certification from the RIAA in 2024, making it the top-selling digital track in U.S. history. The follow-up, Frontiers, peaked at number two in 1983 and delivered Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) and Faithfully. Across their catalog, Journey has earned 25 gold and platinum albums and placed 19 singles in the Billboard top 40, six of which reached the top 10. Their 1988 Greatest Hits compilation sold over 15 million copies and spent 750 weeks on the Billboard album charts.

After a hiatus from 1987 to 1995, Journey reunited with Perry for the album Trial by Fire, which peaked at number three on the Billboard charts in 1996. Perry eventually departed again, and the band brought in Arnel Pineda as lead vocalist in 2007. Pineda's arrival was chronicled in the 2013 documentary Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey. The band has continued performing and recording with a lineup anchored by Schon and Cain, releasing 15 studio albums across five decades of activity.

Who are the members of Journey?

Journey's lineup has evolved significantly since the band's founding in 1973. Neal Schon is the sole remaining original member, serving as lead guitarist from the very beginning. Jonathan Cain has held the keyboard role since 1980, contributing to some of the band's biggest records. Arnel Pineda took over lead vocal duties in 2007 and has been the voice of Journey's live shows since. Deen Castronovo plays drums, Jason Derlatka handles additional keyboards and vocals, and Todd Jensen plays bass. Notable past members include Steve Perry, whose tenor vocals drove the band's commercial peak from 1977 through 1987 and again briefly in the mid-1990s, founding keyboardist Gregg Rolie, longtime bassist Ross Valory, and drummer Steve Smith.

What are Journey's most popular songs?

Journey's catalog spans over five decades, with their most recognizable tracks concentrated in the late 1970s and 1980s. Their best-known songs include:
  • Don't Stop Believin' (1981), the top-selling digital track in U.S. history with 18x platinum RIAA certification
  • Open Arms (1981)
  • Faithfully (1983)
  • Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) (1983)
  • Who's Crying Now (1981)
  • Any Way You Want It (1980)
  • Wheel in the Sky (1978)
  • Lights (1978)
  • Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' (1979)
  • When You Love a Woman (1996)
  • Be Good to Yourself (1986)
Many of these tracks remain staples at Journey concerts, and Don't Stop Believin' has taken on a life of its own as one of the most widely recognized rock songs ever recorded.

What awards has Journey won?

Journey was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2017, with inductees including Neal Schon, Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, Steve Smith, and Aynsley Dunbar. In 2005, the band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their single When You Love a Woman earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1997. Journey's commercial achievements include 25 gold and platinum album certifications and an 18x platinum RIAA Diamond certification for their 1988 Greatest Hits compilation, one of the best-selling greatest hits albums in music history.

What is Journey's fan culture like?

Journey's fanbase spans generations, fueled in large part by the enduring reach of Don't Stop Believin'. The song has become a staple at sporting events, graduation ceremonies, and cultural moments well beyond the band's original era. Journey established an official fan club called Journey Force during their early 1980s peak, and the community has remained active through decades of lineup changes and hiatuses. The band's live shows draw crowds that range from fans who followed the Steve Perry era to newer listeners who discovered the catalog through film, television, and streaming. Arnel Pineda's discovery and rise as the band's vocalist, documented in the 2013 film Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey, added another chapter to the band's story and broadened their international following.
