About Joe Hisaishi

Joe Hisaishi, born Mamoru Fujisawa in 1950 in Nakano, Nagano, Japan, started learning violin at age four and grew up watching hundreds of films a year with his father. He studied music composition at Kunitachi College of Music beginning in 1969, where he developed an ear for minimalist structures and electronic textures. His stage name pays homage to Quincy Jones, with "Hisaishi" derived from an alternate reading of his chosen kanji that sounds close to "Quincy" in Japanese, and "Joe" drawn from "Jones."

Hisaishi's breakthrough came in 1983 when he was tapped to create the score for Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, released in 1984. That collaboration launched a partnership spanning decades and nearly every Miyazaki film since, a working relationship often compared to Steven Spielberg and John Williams. Through Studio Ghibli, Hisaishi scored defining animated films including Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), and Howl's Moving Castle (2004).

Beyond Ghibli, Hisaishi built a prolific career spanning over 100 film scores and solo albums. He composed scores for filmmaker Takeshi Kitano across seven films, including Hana-bi (1997) and Kikujiro (1999), whose title track "Summer" became one of his most recognized pieces. He scored the Academy Award-winning film Departures (2008), composed music for the Ni no Kuni video game series, and provided the soundtrack for the 1998 Winter Paralympics. In 2023, he signed an exclusive recording agreement with Deutsche Grammophon. His live concerts have sold out major halls worldwide, from Nippon Budokan in Tokyo to Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
