The Florida Gators football program represents the University of Florida in Gainesville and competes in the Southeastern Conference. Established in 1906 and playing under the Gators name since 1911, Florida is a founding member of the SEC and one of the most decorated programs in college football history. The Gators have claimed three national championships, in 1996 under Steve Spurrier and in 2006 and 2008 under Urban Meyer, along with eight SEC conference titles. Their all-time record stands at 775-458-40, and the program has produced three Heisman Trophy winners, over 90 first-team All-Americans, and more than 50 NFL first-round draft picks.
Florida plays home games at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, known to fans as "The Swamp," a nickname coined by Spurrier in 1992. With a capacity of 88,548, it is the largest stadium in the state of Florida and one of the most intimidating venues in college football. The stadium opened as Florida Field in 1930 and underwent major expansions in the 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s to reach its current size. The playing surface was renamed Steve Spurrier-Florida Field in 2016 to honor the program's most transformative figure.
Gators football carries a rivalry intensity that few programs can match. The annual game against Georgia Bulldogs Football, historically known as "The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party," takes place at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville each fall with ticket distribution split evenly between the schools. The Florida State Seminoles Football matchup, played around Thanksgiving since the 1970s, regularly carried national-title implications throughout the 1990s. SEC opponents Tennessee Volunteers Football, LSU Tigers Football, and Auburn Tigers Football round out a rivalry slate steeped in decades of history and conference championship stakes. Tailgating starts hours before kickoff in the lots surrounding The Swamp, with orange and blue everywhere and the Pride of the Sunshine marching band setting the tone.
