Matt Rife (born Matthew Steven Rife on September 10, 1995) is an American comedian and actor who has grown into one of stand-up comedy's most in-demand headliners. Raised in the small village of North Lewisburg, Ohio, he caught the comedy bug at 14 years old, when a teacher mentioned a talent show at his high school and a friend encouraged him to give it a shot. He performed in the show — and by the following year he was performing stand-up professionally, kicking off a career that has now spanned well over a decade.
His first big break arrived in 2015 when he joined the cast of MTV's Wild 'n Out, the sketch, improv, and rap battle series, appearing across multiple seasons between 2015 and 2023. He quickly became a familiar face on television, hosting the short-lived 2017 reboot of TRL, competing on The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars, and landing guest spots on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fresh Off the Boat, That '90s Show, and Mo, alongside a steady run of film roles. In 2019, he advanced to the semi-final showcase on NBC's stand-up competition Bring the Funny.
The game-changer was social media. In 2022, The New York Times described Rife as “just another struggling road comedian” — then, over the following year, clips of his rapid-fire crowd work, the improvised back-and-forths he runs with audience members, went viral on TikTok and turned him into one of the most recognizable names in comedy. The surge brought a deal with Creative Artists Agency in December 2022, a run of self-produced and Netflix comedy specials, and a worldwide tour schedule that now fills theaters and arenas night after night.
Rife built his recorded catalog largely on his own terms, writing and self-producing three specials for YouTube: Only Fans (2021), the self-titled Matthew Steven Rife (2023), and Walking Red Flag (2023), an entire hour devoted to audience “red flags.” He then made the jump to Netflix with Natural Selection (2023) and kept the momentum going with the crowd-work specials Lucid (2024) and the Christmas crowd-work special Unwrapped (2025).
On stage, his comedy blends observational humor, improvisation, sketch, and insult comedy, drawing on American culture, pop culture, and the absurdities of everyday life — all delivered with the self-deprecating charm of a kid from small-town Ohio. His worldwide tours, including the ProbleMATTic World Tour, have made him a fixture at major venues across North America and beyond, and performing at Dave Chappelle's 50th birthday show at Madison Square Garden solidified his standing among today's most popular touring comedians. Chappelle — along with Ricky Gervais and Dane Cook — remains one of his biggest influences and a mentor he still turns to.
Rife's rise has been powered less by trophy cabinets than by viral moments and relentless touring — but the recognition has followed anyway. In June 2025, Forbes named him to its Top-Earning Creators list, ranking him seventh with estimated earnings of $50 million, a rare feat for a stand-up comedian. His crossover appeal has also earned him mainstream press attention, including a 2023 New York Times profile of his TikTok-fueled rise and a Variety interview around the release of Natural Selection.
Rife's fanbase was built one viral clip at a time, and his crowds know exactly what they're there for: crowd work. Attendees show up hoping to be picked for an improvised exchange, and the bit fans ran into the ground — shouting “red flag!” in the middle of his sets — became so beloved that he built the entire Walking Red Flag special around it. With quick-witted improv, self-deprecating stories about his Ohio upbringing, and riffs on pop culture and everyday life, no two Matt Rife shows are ever quite the same.
His community reaches beyond stand-up, too. Rife is also a paranormal investigator featured on the YouTube channel Overnight, appeared on Ghost Adventures in 2025, and he and collaborator Elton Castee purchased the former Connecticut home of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren — including its Occult Museum — in 2025, with plans to host tours and overnight stays, making it a bucket-list destination for fans of his comedy and his ghost-hunting side alike. Whether you first found him on Wild 'n Out, Netflix, or a TikTok crowd-work clip, seeing Matt Rife live means you just might end up part of the act.
