About Chicago - The Band

Chicago is an American rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1967. Self-described as a "rock and roll band with horns," the group built its sound by weaving together rock, jazz, R&B, classical, and pop into something that felt entirely its own. The original seven members met across the Chicago music scene and local universities, including DePaul University and Roosevelt University, and initially called themselves the Big Thing before renaming to the Chicago Transit Authority in 1968 and shortening to Chicago in 1969. They signed with Columbia Records and released their debut double album, Chicago Transit Authority, in 1969. That first record reached No. 17 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.

What followed was one of the most prolific runs in rock history. Chicago logged five consecutive No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 and placed 20 singles in the Billboard Hot 100 top ten. In 1971, they became the first rock act to sell out Carnegie Hall for a full week. By 1974, all seven of their albums sat on the Billboard 200 simultaneously. The band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and moved over 40 million units in the U.S. alone, accumulating 23 gold, 18 platinum, and eight multi-platinum certifications from the RIAA. Billboard ranked Chicago among the top 15 Hot 100 artists of all time and ninth on its list of the greatest Billboard 200 artists ever.

The band's sound evolved across decades. Their early work leaned into jazz-rock experimentation, with extended suites and politically charged compositions. Trumpeter Lee Loughnane has said the term "jazz rock" was essentially invented because of Chicago's music. In the 1980s, producer David Foster steered the group toward polished power ballads, a shift that produced some of their biggest commercial hits. Through it all, the horn section remained the sonic signature, with trombonist James Pankow arranging parts where the horns functioned as "another lead vocal" woven in and around the singing.

Who are the original members of Chicago - The Band?

Chicago's original lineup consisted of seven musicians who came together in the late 1960s Chicago music scene.
  • Peter Cetera played bass and shared lead vocal duties, becoming the band's primary lead singer through the mid-1970s and into the 1980s. He departed in 1985 to pursue a solo career.
  • Terry Kath handled guitar and vocals. He was widely regarded as one of the most talented guitarists of his era.
  • Robert Lamm brought keyboards and vocals to the group, contributing many of the band's most iconic compositions including "Saturday in the Park" and "25 or 6 to 4."
  • Lee Loughnane played trumpet and flugelhorn, anchoring the horn section that defined Chicago's sound from the start.
  • James Pankow served as trombonist and primary horn arranger, shaping the brass parts that became the band's signature.
  • Walter Parazaider played woodwinds including saxophone and flute, completing the three-piece horn section alongside Loughnane and Pankow. He retired in 2017.
  • Danny Seraphine was the founding drummer, holding the rhythm section together through the band's first two decades before departing in 1990.
Lamm, Loughnane, and Pankow remained the three core partners who guided the band's direction for decades. Notable later additions included Bill Champlin, who joined in 1981 on vocals, keyboards, and guitar, and Jason Scheff, who replaced Cetera on bass and vocals in 1985.

What are Chicago - The Band's most popular songs?

Chicago's catalog spans over five decades and includes hits across multiple eras of popular music.
  • "25 or 6 to 4" was the band's first top five hit, released on Chicago II in 1970. Written by Robert Lamm, the title references the time of night he was writing the song. It remains one of the most covered and performed songs in their catalog and has been called the number one marching band song in the country.
  • "Saturday in the Park" reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972, blending everyday observations with a feel-good energy that made it a radio staple for decades.
  • "If You Leave Me Now" became Chicago's first No. 1 single in 1976 and won them a Grammy Award. Written by Peter Cetera, it has been covered by over 90 artists worldwide.
  • "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" hit No. 1 in 1982, marking the start of Chicago's successful David Foster era and their second chart-topping single.
  • "You're the Inspiration" peaked at No. 3 in 1984 from Chicago 17, their best-selling album, which earned six-times multi-platinum certification.
  • "Hard Habit to Break" also reached No. 3 in 1984 and earned the band Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Other fan favorites include "Make Me Smile," "Colour My World," "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?," "Beginnings," "Just You 'n' Me," "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," "Will You Still Love Me?," and "Baby, What a Big Surprise."

What awards has Chicago - The Band won?

  • Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, presented in 2020.

What is the Chicago - The Band fan community like?

Chicago's fanbase stretches across generations, connecting listeners who grew up with the jazz-rock experimentation of the early albums and those who discovered the band through the power ballads of the 1980s. The group's music has become a fixture in American pop culture, appearing in soundtracks for films, television series, and commercials over the decades. Their songs are a staple of marching bands across the country, with "25 or 6 to 4" consistently ranked among the most performed marching band arrangements. The band's iconic logo, inspired by the Coca-Cola script and reimagined in a different artistic form on every album cover, has become a recognizable piece of music history in its own right. Chicago has maintained an active touring presence for over five decades, and their live shows draw fans who appreciate both the horn-driven energy of the classic material and the polished balladry of the later catalog. The group has also supported charitable causes throughout the years, including partnerships with the American Cancer Society and benefit performances for Musicians on Call.
