Charli XCX, born Charlotte Emma Aitchison in Cambridge, England, on August 2, 1992, and raised in Start Hill, Essex, took the DIY route into pop. She was writing songs at 14, borrowed her stage name from an old MSN Messenger screen name, and in 2008 began posting demos on Myspace, which led to invitations to perform at warehouse raves in East London. She signed with Asylum Records in 2010, and her early singles "Stay Away" and "Nuclear Seasons" earned Best New Track honors from Pitchfork in 2011.
The breakthrough arrived on other artists' records first. She co-wrote and featured on Icona Pop's "I Love It" (2012), a number-one single in the UK and a global hit, then topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2014 with her feature on Iggy Azalea's "Fancy", one of that year's best-selling singles worldwide. Her own "Boom Clap" became her first solo top-ten single in the US, and her second album, Sucker (2014), became her first album to enter the Billboard 200.
Then came the swerve that defined her. Starting in 2015 she worked with producers tied to London's PC Music collective, founded her own experimental pop label, Vroom Vroom Recordings, and released the Vroom Vroom EP (2016) and the mixtapes Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 (2017), trading mainstream polish for an avant-pop sound that made her a critical favorite. The run that followed stacked milestones: Charli (2019), home to the hit "1999" with Troye Sivan; How I'm Feeling Now (2020), written and recorded in six weeks with fans voting on lyrics, artwork, and sounds; and Crash (2022), her first number-one album in the UK and Australia.
In 2024 she released Brat, her sixth album and second UK number-one. It drew universal critical acclaim, posted a Metacritic score of 95, the highest of any album released that year, was named the best album of 2024 by Billboard and Rolling Stone, and won three Grammy Awards, while its lime-green cover snowballed into a cultural moment dubbed Brat Summer. For anyone weighing Charli XCX tickets, the draw is a live show shaped by the rave scene she came up in: relentless tempo, club-grade production, and a rotating cast of guests. She co-headlined Coachella in 2023 and teamed with Troye Sivan for the co-headlining Sweat tour in 2024.
