The Buffalo Bills are the only NFL team that plays home games in the state of New York, and their footprint runs deeper than one city. The franchise draws much of its fanbase from across western New York and neighboring southern Ontario, and Buffalo Bills tickets are how that two-region fanbase comes together in Orchard Park on game day. The Bills returned to the playoffs in 2017 to end a 17-year drought, then won five consecutive AFC East titles from 2020 through 2024. The era also brought a landmark change of scenery: the new Highmark Stadium opened in 2026, succeeding a stadium the franchise had called home since 1973.
Founded in 1959 and borrowing their name from an earlier Buffalo franchise that honored frontiersman Buffalo Bill, the Bills began play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League and joined the NFL in the 1970 merger. Buffalo won back-to-back AFL championships in 1964 and 1965 behind quarterback Jack Kemp and coach Lou Saban, the only major professional sports championships ever won by a team representing Buffalo. The defining run came under head coach Marv Levy, when Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, Andre Reed, and Darryl Talley made the Bills a perennial contender. From the 1990 through 1993 seasons, that core delivered four consecutive AFC championships and a record four straight Super Bowl appearances. They lost all four of those Super Bowls, and both streaks still stand as NFL records. The run included The Comeback, when Frank Reich led the Bills from a 35-3 deficit to a 41-38 playoff win over the Houston Oilers. The only three numbers retired in team history belong to that core: Kelly's 12, Thomas's 34, and Smith's 78. Kelly, Thomas, Smith, Reed, and Levy all stand in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Smith holds the NFL record for sacks.
Bills game days carry a reputation that extends well beyond western New York. The tailgates in Orchard Park are headlined by Bills Mafia, the fan community that organized on Twitter starting in 2010 and became so central to the franchise that the team trademarked the name in 2020, famous for smashing through folding tables before kickoff. The generosity matches the spectacle: when a Cincinnati Bengals win helped end the franchise's 17-year playoff drought in 2017, Bills fans crowdfunded hundreds of thousands of dollars to the charities of Bengals players Andy Dalton and Tyler Boyd, and in 2020 fans donated nearly $700,000 to Oishei Children's Hospital. Inside the stadium, a Bills rendition of the Isley Brothers hit "Shout" plays after every touchdown and field goal, a tradition since 1987, while "Mr. Brightside" by The Killers has become a fourth-quarter ritual since 2024. The fans themselves are enshrined on the team's Wall of Fame, inducted in 1992, and the official Bills Backers network spans more than 200 chapters across North America, Europe, and Oceania.
