Bryan Adams was born Bryan Guy Adams on November 5, 1959, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The son of English immigrants who had emigrated from Plymouth in the 1950s, Adams grew up in a globally mobile household. His father worked as a diplomat, and the family lived in Portugal, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom before settling in Ottawa and later North Vancouver. Adams picked up his first electric guitar at age 10 while living in Reading, England, and by 15 he was fronting the Canadian glam rock band Sweeney Todd, replacing vocalist Nick Gilder.
In 1978, Adams met songwriter Jim Vallance in a Vancouver music store, sparking one of the most productive songwriting partnerships in Canadian rock history. The pair co-wrote prolifically through the 1980s, crafting material for Adams as well as artists like Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Kiss, Joe Cocker, and Bonnie Raitt. After signing to A&M Records, Adams released his self-titled debut in 1980. His 1983 album Cuts Like a Knife broke him into the mainstream, with "Straight from the Heart" reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The 1984 album Reckless cemented Adams as a global star. It reached number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Album Chart, produced six singles that all landed in the Top 15 of the Hot 100, and sold over 12 million copies worldwide. It was the first album by a Canadian artist to be certified Diamond in Canada. Tracks like "Run to You," "Heaven" (a U.S. number one), and "Summer of '69" became defining songs of the decade. In 1991, "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You," written for the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves soundtrack, spent 16 consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart and topped charts in at least 19 countries. The single sold more than 15 million copies, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time. The accompanying album Waking Up the Neighbours moved 16 million copies and earned a second Diamond certification in Canada. Through the 1990s, Adams continued to deliver worldwide hits including "Please Forgive Me," "All for Love" (a U.S. number one collaboration with Rod Stewart and Sting), and "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" (another U.S. number one). His estimated career sales sit between 75 and 100 million records worldwide.
