About Avenged Sevenfold

Avenged Sevenfold, almost always shortened to A7X, is a heavy metal band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999 by four friends who had all already played in punk and ska bands. The name is a reference to the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis, though the band has never been religious. They cut a three-song demo in 1999 and played their first show at Walnut City Hall in February 2000, and the sound has never sat still since. Early albums Sounding the Seventh Trumpet (2001) and Waking the Fallen (2003) were rooted in metalcore, City of Evil (2005) traded screamed vocals for a classic heavy metal attack, and later records bent toward progressive metal on The Stage (2016) and open experimentation on Life Is But a Dream... (2023). The constant across every era is the dual-guitar interplay of lead guitarist Synyster Gates and rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance, a hallmark of the band's sound since the beginning.

The breakout came with City of Evil, the band's 2005 major-label debut on Warner Bros. Records, which is credited with launching Avenged Sevenfold to international popularity. Its single Bat Country reached No. 2 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and its video hit No. 1 on MTV's Total Request Live, earning the band their first gold record, later certified platinum. The self-titled album followed in 2007 and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. Nightmare (2010) then delivered Avenged Sevenfold's first No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200, and Hail to the King (2013) topped the Billboard 200 along with the UK, Canadian, Irish, Finnish, and Brazilian album charts. Along the way, the band has sold more than 8 million albums worldwide, collected five platinum album awards from the RIAA, and written four original songs for the Call of Duty: Black Ops series. Loudwire ranked them No. 47 on its list of the Top 50 Metal Bands of All Time, and they are considered part of the Big Four of 2000s metal alongside Slipknot, Lamb of God, and System of a Down.

On stage, Avenged Sevenfold is a band that climbed every rung on the way up. They played the Vans Warped Tour in their early years and headlined it in 2006, the same year they joined the Ozzfest main stage. Headlining runs on the Taste of Chaos tour in 2008 and the Uproar Festival in 2011 followed, along with prime slots at Rock in Rio, Download Festival, and Welcome to Rockville. In 2016, Avenged Sevenfold opened the first rock show ever staged at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis as support for Metallica, then spent 2017 as main support on Metallica's WorldWired stadium tour across the US and Canada. For The Stage touring cycle, the band brought in Cirque du Soleil directors to help build the production, and Loudwire named them Live Act of the Year in 2011. Whether you're weighing Avenged Sevenfold tickets for an arena headlining run or a festival slot, you're looking at a band with more than 25 years of stage craft behind it.

Who are the members of Avenged Sevenfold?

Five musicians make up the Avenged Sevenfold lineup that came together in 2015, fronted by founders M. Shadows and Zacky Vengeance:
  • M. Shadows: lead vocalist and founder, the voice at the front of the band since its 1999 formation.
  • Zacky Vengeance: rhythm guitarist and founder whose raw playing style balances the flashier lead work beside him.
  • Synyster Gates: lead guitarist since 2001, whose jazz and classical training shapes his sweep-picked solos.
  • Johnny Christ: bassist since 2002, whose arrival completed the band's best-known lineup.
  • Brooks Wackerman: drummer since 2015, formerly of Bad Religion.

What are Avenged Sevenfold's most popular songs?

A core group of Avenged Sevenfold songs has defined the band across every era of the catalog:
  • Bat Country, the City of Evil single that reached No. 2 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
  • Almost Easy and Afterlife, the standout singles from the 2007 self-titled album.
  • Nightmare, the title track from the 2010 album that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
  • Hail to the King, which won Loudwire's Best Rock Song award in 2013.
  • A Little Piece of Heaven, the brass-and-strings track inspired by Broadway show tunes.
  • Buried Alive, a Nightmare-era favorite and Revolver Song of the Year nominee.
  • Unholy Confessions, the early Waking the Fallen single whose video landed in rotation on MTV2's Headbangers Ball.

What awards has Avenged Sevenfold won?

Avenged Sevenfold's awards stretch from the MTV Video Music Awards to a Grammy nomination, with hardware from Kerrang!, Revolver's Golden Gods, and the Loudwire Music Awards along the way:
  • Best New Artist at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, won against Rihanna, Chris Brown, and Panic! at the Disco.
  • Album of the Year at the 2008 Kerrang! Awards for the self-titled record.
  • A 2011 Golden Gods haul for Nightmare, including Album of the Year, Best Vocalist for M. Shadows, and Best Guitarists for Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengeance.

What is Avenged Sevenfold's fan base like?

Avenged Sevenfold's fans are dedicated enough that the fan base itself has won awards. The band's audience earned Revolver's Golden Gods award for Most Dedicated Fans in both 2012 and 2014, with a Loudwire Most Devoted Fans nomination in between in 2013. The emblem of the community is the Deathbat, the band's logo, which was projected onto buildings in London, Berlin, Toronto, and Paris ahead of the surprise release of The Stage in 2016. What sets the fan base apart is the willingness to follow the band through wholesale reinventions, from metalcore beginnings to classic heavy metal, progressive metal, and experimental records. Frontman M. Shadows acknowledged that bond in a 2020 open letter, saying he feels grateful for an audience that has allowed the band to evolve with them.
