About The Strokes

The Strokes are an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1998 and unchanged in lineup since their first shows. Julian Casablancas handles lead vocals and the bulk of the songwriting, with Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. on guitar, Nikolai Fraiture on bass, and Fabrizio Moretti on drums. The group became a defining act of the early-2000s garage rock and post-punk revival, taking the scrappy energy of downtown Manhattan and sharpening it into something taut, melodic, and unmistakably their own.

Their debut EP, The Modern Age, arrived in 2001 and triggered a bidding war before Is This It landed that same year and earned a permanent spot on countless greatest-albums lists. Room on Fire (2003) and First Impressions of Earth (2005) followed, then a multi-year hiatus gave way to Angles (2011) and Comedown Machine (2013). The New Abnormal (2020), produced by Rick Rubin, won Best Rock Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. A seventh album, Reality Awaits, arrived in 2026. Live, The Strokes trade on the same wiry guitars, deadpan croon, and deep catalog that built their reputation, moving between early favorites and newer material without missing a step.

Who are the members of The Strokes?

The Strokes have kept the same five members since forming in 1998. Julian Casablancas is the lead vocalist and primary songwriter, the voice and lyrical center of the band's catalog. Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. split guitar duties, with Valensi's sharp, effects-driven leads and Hammond's rhythmic playing defining the band's twin-guitar attack. Nikolai Fraiture plays bass, and Fabrizio Moretti is on drums. The five came together in Manhattan as teenagers, and the lineup has stayed intact across every studio album.

What are The Strokes' most popular songs?

The Strokes have built a catalog that spans more than two decades, and certain songs have become fixtures of their live sets. The most widely recognized include:
  • Last Nite
  • Hard to Explain
  • Someday
  • 12:51
  • Reptilia
  • Juicebox
  • You Only Live Once
  • Under Cover of Darkness
  • The Adults Are Talking
  • Bad Decisions
Is This It remains the album most closely tied to their reputation, and its tracks are staples whenever The Strokes play live.

What awards have The Strokes won?

The Strokes have earned recognition in both the US and the UK. Their most prominent honor is a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album, won at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards for The New Abnormal. Is This It took Best International Album at the 2002 NME Awards and also earned an ASCAP Vanguard Award, while Spin named the band its Band of the Year that same year. In 2006, The Strokes won Best International Band at the NME Awards. Is This It was also named NME's Greatest Album of the Decade for the 2000s and placed second on a similar list from Rolling Stone.

What is The Strokes' fan culture like?

The Strokes are bound up with the early-2000s New York City rock scene, and that downtown lineage shapes the crowd at their shows. Fans span people who caught them in small Manhattan clubs and listeners who came up on the later records, and the live set leans on the wiry, high-energy sound of their earliest days. Their influence carried into the rock acts that followed, from The Killers to Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand. Touring has taken The Strokes from intimate rooms to festival main stages around the world, and for many fans the draw is hearing the songs that shaped a decade of guitar music played the way they were meant to be heard.
