About Oregon Ducks Football

The Oregon Ducks football program has been a force in college football since the 2000s, but its roots run much deeper. The University of Oregon first fielded a football team in 1894, winning its debut game 44-2 over Albany College. Originally known as the Webfoots, the program claimed its first Rose Bowl victory in 1917 with a 14-0 win over Pennsylvania. Over the decades, Oregon built one of the most recognizable brands in the sport, fueled by a close partnership with Nike, which was founded in Eugene by Phil Knight and his track coach Bill Bowerman. That relationship transformed the Ducks into a style-defining program with some of the most creative uniforms in college football.

Oregon plays its home games at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, a venue that holds over 54,000 fans and is widely regarded as one of the loudest stadiums in college football. The crowd registered 127.2 decibels during a 2007 game against USC Trojans Football, ranking among the loudest recordings in the sport's history. The field is named Rich Brooks Field in honor of the coach who led Oregon to its first outright conference championship in 1994. From Rich Brooks through Mike Bellotti, Chip Kelly, and Dan Lanning, Oregon has stacked conference titles and national relevance at a pace few programs can match.

The Ducks have claimed 17 conference championships across multiple leagues, including nine Pac-12 titles and a Big Ten championship in their inaugural 2024 season in the conference. Oregon reached the BCS National Championship Game after the 2010 season and advanced to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game following the 2014 season. The program has produced NFL talent at every position, from Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts and defensive backs Mel Renfro and Dave Wilcox to Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota and Outland Trophy winner Penei Sewell.

How many championships have the Oregon Ducks Football team won?

The Oregon Ducks have claimed 17 conference championships across their history. Their titles span multiple conference affiliations:
  • Big Ten: 2024 (their first season in the conference)
  • Pac-12: 1994, 2000, 2001, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2019, 2020
  • Pacific Coast Conference: 1929, 1933, 1948, 1957
  • Northwest Conference: 1916, 1919
  • OIFA: 1895
Oregon has appeared in the College Football Playoff three times (2014, 2024, 2025) and reached the national championship game twice, falling to Auburn Tigers Football after the 2010 season in the BCS title game and to Ohio State Buckeyes Football after the 2014 season in the inaugural CFP National Championship.

Who is the biggest rival of the Oregon Ducks Football team?

The Oregon Ducks have two primary rivals. The Oregon State Beavers Football and the Ducks have played in a rivalry commonly known as the Civil War since 1894, making it the fifth-most played rivalry game in FBS history. The two campuses sit less than fifty miles apart in the Willamette Valley, and Oregon leads the all-time series 68-49-10. The Washington Huskies Football are Oregon's other major rival, in a series that dates back to 1900. Known informally as the Cascade Clash, the rivalry gained national attention when Oregon cornerback Kenny Wheaton sealed a 1994 win with a 97-yard interception return, a play known as "The Pick" that became a pregame tradition on the Autzen Stadium video board.

What individual awards have Oregon Ducks Football players won?

Oregon's most decorated player is Marcus Mariota, who won the 2014 Heisman Trophy with the second-highest point percentage in the award's history. Mariota also swept the Maxwell Award, the Davey O'Brien Award, and the Walter Camp Award that same season. Other major national award winners include:
  • LaMichael James, 2010 Doak Walker Award (nation's outstanding running back)
  • Penei Sewell, 2019 Outland Trophy (nation's outstanding interior lineman)
  • Justin Herbert, 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy
  • Jackson Powers-Johnson, 2023 Rimington Trophy
The program has produced 11 consensus All-Americans and sent multiple players to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including quarterback Dan Fouts and defensive backs Mel Renfro and Dave Wilcox.

What is the fan culture like at Oregon Ducks Football games?

Oregon Ducks fans are known for creating one of the most intense home environments in college football. Autzen Stadium's design channels crowd noise directly onto the field, and the atmosphere consistently ranks among the loudest in the sport. The program's partnership with Nike has made game day a visual experience unlike any other in college football, with fans tracking each week's unique uniform combination as part of the buildup. Kenny Wheaton's legendary 97-yard interception return from the 1994 Washington game became a pregame staple on the video board at Autzen, setting the tone for kickoff. The Duck mascot, the fight song "Mighty Oregon," and the program's green-and-yellow color scheme are all central to a fan identity that blends Pacific Northwest pride with a modern, nationally relevant football program.
