About Auburn Tigers Football

Auburn Tigers football is one of the longest-running programs in the country, with roots stretching back to 1892 when Auburn played in the first football game in the Deep South against Georgia at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. The program joined the Southeastern Conference as a founding member in 1932 and has built one of college football's most storied legacies in the decades since. With two major wire-service national championships (1957 and 2010), eight SEC titles, and over 800 all-time wins, the Tigers rank among the 15 winningest programs in FBS history.

The program's list of iconic players reads like a college football history book. Pat Sullivan won the Heisman Trophy as a quarterback in 1971, Bo Jackson took it as a running back in 1985, and Cam Newton claimed it as a quarterback in 2010 while leading the Tigers to a 14-0 season and a BCS National Championship victory over Oregon. The Heisman Trophy itself is named after John Heisman, who coached at Auburn from 1895 to 1899, and Auburn remains the only school where Heisman coached that has produced a Heisman winner. The program has also produced 31 consensus All-Americans and 12 College Football Hall of Fame inductees, including coaching legends Ralph "Shug" Jordan, Pat Dye, Mike Donahue, and Heisman himself.

Game days at Jordan-Hare Stadium are something else entirely. The 88,043-seat venue, which opened in 1939, effectively becomes Alabama's fifth-largest city when the Tigers play at home. Before kickoff, thousands of fans line Donahue Drive for Tiger Walk, greeting players as they make their way to the stadium in a tradition that dates back to the 1950s and has been called "the most copied tradition in all of college football." A live golden eagle circles the field before every home game, embodying the program's famous "War Eagle" battle cry, and after victories, fans flood Toomer's Corner to roll the oak trees at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and College Street.

How many national championships has Auburn Tigers Football won?

Auburn claims nine national championships across the history of the program: 1910, 1913, 1914, 1957, 1958, 1983, 1993, 2004, and 2010. Two of those were awarded by the major wire services (AP Poll and Coaches' Poll). The 1957 team, coached by Ralph "Shug" Jordan, finished with a perfect 10-0 record and earned the AP's top ranking. The 2010 squad, led by Heisman winner Cam Newton, went 14-0 and defeated Oregon 22-19 in the BCS National Championship Game for the program's first undisputed title. Auburn also won SEC championships in both of those seasons, along with six additional conference titles in 1983, 1987, 1988, 1989, 2004, and 2013.

Who is the biggest rival of Auburn Tigers Football?

Auburn's biggest rival is Alabama. The two programs meet every year in the Iron Bowl, widely regarded as one of the most intense rivalries in all of sports. The series has produced some of the most memorable moments in college football, including the 2013 "Kick Six," when Auburn returned a missed Alabama field goal for a game-winning touchdown to knock off the top-ranked Crimson Tide. Auburn also shares a deep historical rivalry with Georgia in what is known as the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry, a series that dates all the way back to that first game in 1892. SEC matchups against LSU and Florida also carry significant weight on the schedule each season.
