Brooks & Dunn are an American country music duo built on two personalities that could not be more different: Kix Brooks, the high-energy showman out of Shreveport, Louisiana, and Ronnie Dunn, the soulful, quietly intense vocalist from Coleman, Texas. Songwriter and record producer Tim DuBois paired them in 1988, betting that two solo artists who had each charted singles through the 1980s would click together. The bet paid off. Their sound splits the difference between rambunctious, rocked-up honky-tonk with punchy, danceable beats and smooth, pop-tinged ballads, with Dunn's baritone carrying most of the signature hits and Brooks supplying the stage fire.
The debut album, Brand New Man, landed in 1991 and made history straight out of the gate. Its first four singles, Brand New Man, My Next Broken Heart, Neon Moon, and Boot Scootin' Boogie, all reached number one, the first duo or group in country music history to open a career that way. The album went on to ship six million copies in the United States. Across the catalog, Brooks & Dunn have released 50 singles, sent 20 to number one on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, and pushed 19 more into the top 10. My Maria finished as the top country song of 1996 and Ain't Nothing 'bout You did the same in 2001 with a six-week run at number one, the duo's longest. Boot Scootin' Boogie helped repopularize line dancing across the United States. In 1996, the duo won Entertainer of the Year from both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, and the CMA named them Vocal Duo of the Year every year from 1992 to 2006 except 2000.
The first run ended in 2010. After announcing retirement in 2009, Brooks & Dunn wrapped The Last Rodeo tour with a final concert on September 2, 2010, at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, with proceeds benefiting the Country Music Hall of Fame. Both members kept recording, Dunn with a self-titled 2011 solo album and Brooks with New to This Town in 2012, before reuniting in 2015 for a run of Las Vegas shows with Reba McEntire that became a recurring engagement. Induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame followed in 2019, the same year the duo released Reboot, a set of their hits re-recorded with contemporary country artists such as Luke Combs and Kane Brown. Reboot II arrived in 2024 with collaborators spanning Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, and Halestorm. As Dunn put it when the duo first wrapped up, "We've ended up more like brothers." Brooks & Dunn tickets now draw multiple generations of country fans at once, from the line-dance faithful of the 1990s to the newer listeners the Reboot projects brought in.
