Luke Combs was born in Huntersville, North Carolina, just outside Charlotte, and grew up in Asheville out in the western part of the state. He was singing early, in chorus class, school musicals, and a church choir that got to perform at Carnegie Hall. At Appalachian State University he studied business, then criminal justice with an eye on becoming a homicide detective, and he worked as a bouncer at a bar before ending up on that same bar's stage. After teaching himself guitar on his mother's advice, he played his first country show at the Parthenon Cafe in Boone, left school with 21 credit hours still to go, and moved to Nashville to chase country music full time.
The move worked out. His debut EP, The Way She Rides, arrived in 2014, and his debut single, "Hurricane," climbed to number one on country radio in May 2017. That June, his first album, This One's for You, opened at number one on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart and reached the top five of the Billboard 200. Then came the streak: "When It Rains It Pours," "One Number Away," "She Got the Best of Me," and "Beautiful Crazy" all hit number one on Country Airplay, making him the first artist to send his first five singles to the top of that chart. This One's for You went on to log 44 weeks at number one on Top Country Albums, the longest run by a male artist, and in June 2019 he was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry.
From there, the catalog kept stacking up. What You See Is What You Get (2019) topped charts in multiple territories and produced four more number ones, including "Does to Me," a duet with Eric Church, and its deluxe edition's "Forever After All" set country streaming records on Apple Music and Spotify. Growin' Up (2022) and Gettin' Old (2023) kept the pace, and his cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" became a crossover hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100, winning Single of the Year at the 2023 CMA Awards, and leading to a duet performance with Chapman at the 2024 Grammys. Fathers & Sons arrived in 2024, and The Way I Am (2026) became his fifth album to top the Top Country Albums chart.
