June grew up in the flatlands of West Tennessee, where she taught herself guitar at a young age and honed a distinctive songwriting style that blended elements of roots, reggae and country. Her earliest musical group was the husband-and-wife duo Bella Sun, with which she played shows around Memphis until her marriage dissolved and she left the South to perform wherever people would listen to her.
