Valerie June tour dates
Originally from Memphis, singer-songwriter Valerie June embodies all of that city’s most hallowed musical traditions, blending elements of blues, classical soul and folk into an evocative style all her own. A multi-instrumentalist who knows her way around a lap steel and a banjo, June nonetheless specializes in writing guitar-based songs that highlight her impressive voice. She has come a long way from the days when she used to play for change in bus stations, and fans who want Valerie June concert tickets today will have to find them at larger venues like the Paramount Theatre in Austin and Town Hall in New York City, where she recently moved to take her career to the next level.
Valerie June’s background
June grew up in the flatlands of West Tennessee, where she taught herself guitar at a young age and honed a distinctive songwriting style that blended elements of roots, reggae and country. Her earliest musical group was the husband-and-wife duo Bella Sun, with which she played shows around Memphis until her marriage dissolved and she left the South to perform wherever people would listen to her. This often meant spending hours playing to strangers in bus stops, which undoubtedly prepared June for the sold-out crowds she’d be performing for years later.
June’s big break came when she moved back to Memphis and was featured in the MTV-produced web series $5 Cover, which covered several of the city’s up-and-coming musicians as they tried to make it big in the industry. That experience eventually led to tours with folk-country vets Old Crow Medicine Show and British singer-songwriter Jake Bugg, both of which introduced June’s music to the bigger audience it always deserved.
Valerie June’s biggest hits
Most of June’s best-known hits come from her 2013 album Pushin’ Against a Stone, which she recorded after moving to Brooklyn from Memphis. That album has found an audience on both sides of the Atlantic, with singles “Wanna Be on Your Mind” and “Workin’ Woman Blues” both proving to be durable hits.
