Founded in 2005, Toronto FC is a professional soccer team that plays in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. Their team plays at BMO Field near Lake Ontario.
Toronto FC background
Toronto FC was started in 2005, when MLS agreed to award an expansion team to the city. The team name was chosen by an online vote, and they were the first MLS team to play in Canada.
Toronto FC slowly built momentum during their first two seasons, and by 2009 they nearly made the playoffs, losing to the New York Red Bulls during the final game of the season. In 2015, Toronto FC finally clinched their first shot at the playoffs.
Toronto FC milestones
In its history, Toronto FC has reached the playoffs twice: in 2015 and 2016. In 2015, the team was eliminated by the Montreal Impact in the Eastern Conference knockout round. In 2016, Toronto FC won its first playoff game, defeating Philadelphia Union in the knockout round. The team then defeated New York City FC and proceeded to face off against the Montreal Impact, in an all-Canadian Eastern Conference final round.
The team has also had plenty of other accomplishments to celebrate. The club won the Canadian Championship in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016. They were also runners-up in the Canadian Championship in 2008 and 2014. The Toronto FC has also one the Trillium Cup, a two-team rivalry game between Columbus Crew SC and Toronto FC, in 2011, 2014 and 2016. During the 2011-2012 season, the team reached the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, a league of 24 teams from North America, the Caribbean and Central America.
