About The Weeknd
The Weeknd, born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye in Metropolitan Toronto on February 16, 1990, grew up in Scarborough as the only child of Ethiopian immigrants, raised by his mother and grandmother with Amharic as his first language. In 2009 he began uploading songs to YouTube anonymously, with no name, no interviews, and no face, and the mystery became part of the appeal. Those shadowy releases became the 2011 mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence, put out through XO, the record label he co-founded that same year. House of Balloons made the Polaris Music Prize shortlist and is now widely credited with helping reshape contemporary R&B.
The jump from anonymous mixtapes to the mainstream came fast. Republic Records signed him in 2012 and repackaged the mixtapes as Trilogy, which earned platinum certification in the United States. His 2014 single "Earned It," from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack, reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and picked up an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) then broke the doors open, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with 412,000 first-week units while "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills" both topped the Hot 100. Starboy (2016) repeated the feat, with the Daft Punk-assisted title track hitting number one and the album winning the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album, his second straight win in that category.
What followed is one of the great runs in pop history. After Hours (2020) debuted at number one with 444,000 units and became the most-streamed R&B album of all time, anchored by "Blinding Lights," the best-performing song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, the most-streamed song on Spotify, and the longest-charting solo track on the chart at 90 weeks. In 2020 he became the first artist to lead the Billboard 200, Hot 100, Artist 100, Hot 100 Songwriters, and Hot 100 Producers charts simultaneously, and in February 2021 he headlined the Super Bowl LV halftime show as the first Canadian solo artist to do it. Dawn FM (2022) and Hurry Up Tomorrow (2025) kept the streak alive, with Hurry Up Tomorrow opening at 490,500 units for his fifth number-one album. His all-stadium After Hours til Dawn Tour set the record for the highest-grossing tour by a male soloist in history, and its final North American show at SoFi Stadium became an HBO concert film and live album.
