The Roots Tickets
The Roots TicketsFrom its origins in Philadelphia, The Roots pioneered a unique fusion of hip-hop, jazz and soul. Originally known as Radio Activity, the band cycled through a number of names, including Black to the Future, The Square Roots and finally just The Roots. After rising to prominence in the 1990s, The Roots agreed to become the official band of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where it would play in front of millions of people every week. In 2008, the band created its own music festival called The Roots Picnic in Philadelphia. It was also the headline act at the 2017 NBA All-Star Game.
From the Ground UpThe Roots is the brainchild of lead singer Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson. While attending Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in 1987, the duo formed a band and performed at small venues around the city. After moving to London, The Roots released its debut album, Organix, on May 19, 1993, which brought it a cult following. The following year, the band capitalized on this success with the release of Do You Want More?!!!??!, which was certified gold by the RIAA. The Roots had an early breakthrough when it was invited to play at Lollapalooza in 1995, a sign of its growing clout. The band's fourth album, Things Fall Apart, in 1999 was its most successful to date with more than a million sales in the United States alone. While continuing to tour and record albums, The Roots joined Jimmy Fallon in 2009 and followed him to The Tonight Show five years later. Jimmy Fallon sometimes includes the band in his comedy sketches. On the awards circuit, The Roots has received an impressive 14 nominations from the Grammy Awards. Its first win came in 1999 for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. In 2010, the band won Best R&B Album for Wake Up! and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for "Hang On In There." Over its prodigious career, The Roots has collaborated with Elvis Costello, John Legend and Eve.
