Few shows define their genre as completely as The Phantom of the Opera defines gothic romance. Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, with lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, turns Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel into the story of Christine Daaé, a young soprano at the Paris Opera who draws the obsessive attention of a masked musical genius living in the maze of tunnels beneath the opera house. The production premiered at London's Her Majesty's Theatre, now His Majesty's Theatre, on 9 October 1986, directed by Harold Prince and led by Michael Crawford as the Phantom, Sarah Brightman as Christine, and Steve Barton as Raoul. It opened at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway on 26 January 1988, and Phantom tickets have been in demand on both sides of the Atlantic ever since.
The Broadway production rewrote the record books. It was the first show in Broadway history to pass 10,000 performances, reaching the mark on 11 February 2012, and the original staging closed on 16 April 2023 after 13,981 performances at the Majestic Theatre, more than any Broadway show had ever played. London's original run lasted 33 years in the same theatre, a stretch that made it the second longest-running musical in West End history behind only Les Misérables, and a revised production returned to that theatre in 2021. With estimated worldwide grosses topping $6 billion, The Phantom of the Opera was the most financially successful entertainment event in the world until The Lion King passed it in 2014. By 2019, more than 140 million people had seen the show in 183 cities across 41 countries.
What audiences get live is grand-scale musical theater. Maria Björnson's designs supplied more than 200 costumes plus the signature half-mask and chandelier, Gillian Lynne shaped the musical staging, and Lloyd Webber's score moves between sweeping ballads and operatic pastiche written for the fictional operas staged inside the story, from Hannibal to Don Juan Triumphant. The story grew beyond the stage with Joel Schumacher's 2004 film adaptation and Love Never Dies, the 2010 sequel musical, but the stage production remains the complete experience: the gondola crossing the underground lake to the Phantom's lair, and a chandelier moment that still draws gasps.
