Scottish rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain have ridden their signature chaotic distortion and screeching feedback to critical acclaim and the dedication of a solid fan base since the mid-'80s. Beginning with the tumultuous bedlam of their earliest live shows and the cult success of their hit single "Just Like Honey," The Jesus and Mary Chain have left an indelible mark in the annals of indie rock. Changing lineups and creative progressions over 30-plus years of making music have led to the band's first album release in nearly two decades.

The Jesus and Mary Chain's background

Brothers William and Jim Reid formed The Jesus and Mary Chain in 1984. Together they blended the divergent influences of the Velvet Underground and the Stooges' punk turbulence with the shiny pop buoyancy of the Beach Boys and Phil Spector. The band's early days were marked by riotous live shows as well as the release of their debut single, "Upside Down."

The Jesus and Mary Chain's debut album, 1985's Psychocandy, produced the singles "Just Like Honey," "You Trip Me Up" and "Never Understand." The band was lauded in indie circles as pioneers of a new sound. Darklands (1987) and Automatic (1989) followed.

The Jesus and Mary Chain increased their visibility stateside with 1992's Honey's Dead and a performance at Lollapalooza. In 1994 came the largely acoustic Stoned & Dethroned, noted for the band's duet with Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval on the track "Sometimes Always."

Following a collection of B-sides (The Jesus and Mary Chain Hate Rock 'n' Roll) and the release of 1998's Munki, The Jesus and Mary Chain officially disbanded for an eight-year hiatus, after which the Reid brothers and new musicians came together to play at the Coachella and Meltdown festivals. The reunion was also marked by the release of a B-sides and rarities box set, the reissue of previous studio albums and more live shows across the U.S. and Europe. The band also announced the arrival of their seventh full-length album, Damage & Joy, in early 2017.
