The Americas Rugby Championship TicketsFeaturing big hits and pulse-pounding action, the Americas Rugby Championship is the premier rugby union event of the Western Hemisphere. With the growing popularity and exposure of rugby across both continents in the 1990s, World Rugby began to consider how to implement a Pan-American tournament. Five separate inter-continental rugby competitions were played between 1995 and 2003. An earlier version of the ARC began in 2009, featuring fewer teams and a different format. Following a yearlong hiatus for teams to participate in the Rugby World Cup, the current incarnation of the Americas Rugby Championship began in 2016 as an effort to grow the sport throughout the hemisphere. The format of the tournament is largely based on Europe’s Six Nations model. A secondary competition, the Americas Rugby Challenge, brings together the next best teams from across the Americas around the same time. Get your Americas Rugby Championship tickets at StubHub,
Who participates in the Americas Rugby Championship?Every year, the Americas Rugby Championship features the six best national teams from across the two continents: Argentina XV, Uruguay, the United States, Canada, Chile and Brazil. Up until 2020, the same teams have participated every year. However, to make the tournament more equitable in the future, a one-game promotion-relegation match-up will take place between the winner of the Americas Rugby Challenge and the last place finisher of the Americas Rugby Championship. This gives teams a chance to move up or down in competition.
What is the format of the Americas Rugby Championship? The Americas Rugby Championship takes the form of a five-week round robin tournament. Each team is guaranteed to play everyone else exactly once. This means there are 15 games across the entire tournament. Matches take place in the country of the designated home team. Following the standard international rules, teams receive four points for a victory and two points for a draw. A bonus point is awarded for scoring four or more tries in a match. An additional point is awarded for losing by seven or fewer points. No points are awarded for losing by more points. The team with the most points at the end of the round robin tournament is declared the winner. If multiple teams are tied in the standings, then various tiebreakers come into play to determine the final ranking.
When does the Americas Rugby Championship take place?Starting with the 2020 tournament, the Americas Rugby Championship will take place in August and September. The new date was chosen to better align with the global rugby calendar, including Major League Rugby in North America and the Superliga Americana de Rugby in South America. The 2020 tournament will feature three games each on Aug. 15, Aug. 22, Aug. 29, Sept. 5 and Sept. 12. A more detailed schedule with exact times should be announced closer to the start of the tournament.
Who was the winner of the last Americas Rugby Championship?Argentina XV won the 2019 Americas Rugby Championship with 25 points and a perfect 5-0 record. The team had a truly dominating performance with 258 points for and only 60 points against. In individual matchups, Argentina XV beat Brazil 54-3, the United States 45-14, Uruguay 35-10, Canada 39-23 and Chile 85-10. It was the team’s second overall championship since the 2016 ARC reboot. Josh Reeves from Brazil led all scorers with 54 points. Martin Elias led Argentina XV with 38 points.
