About Texas Longhorns Football

Few programs carry the historical weight of the Texas Longhorns Football. The University of Texas at Austin has fielded a football team since 1893, and more than 130 seasons later the Longhorns sit among the winningest programs the sport has ever seen. Home games unfold at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, an on-campus giant in Austin that seats more than 100,000 and ranks among the largest college football venues anywhere. After eight decades of ruling the Southwest Conference and 28 seasons in the Big 12, Texas joined the Southeastern Conference in 2024, reviving old rivalries and adding new heavyweight matchups along the way.

The résumé backs the swagger. Texas claims four national championships (1963, 1969, 1970, and 2005) plus 34 conference titles across three different leagues, including a record 27 Southwest Conference crowns. Darrell Royal set the standard, going 167-47-5 in 20 seasons from 1957 to 1976 and winning three of those national championships, and the home stadium now bears his name. Mack Brown delivered the fourth in 2005, when his Longhorns finished 13-0 and outlasted the USC Trojans Football 41-38 in the Rose Bowl to win the BCS national championship. The modern chapters stack up too: Texas reached the College Football Playoff in back-to-back seasons in 2023 and 2024, and the program stands as the first to win all six of college football's New Year's Six bowls.

Game day in Austin is a citywide production. Burnt orange takes over the campus hours before kickoff, the crowd inside the stadium is one of the largest in college football, and a win turns the UT Tower orange above campus. The move to the SEC stacked the home schedule with marquee opponents, and the annual neutral-site trip to Dallas for the Red River Rivalry remains one of the most coveted tickets in the sport.

How many national championships have the Texas Longhorns Football won?

The Texas Longhorns Football program claims four national championships, won in 1963, 1969, 1970, and 2005. Darrell Royal coached the first three, beginning with an 11-0 1963 season capped by a Cotton Bowl victory over the second-ranked Navy Midshipmen Football. Mack Brown coached the 2005 team, which finished 13-0 and beat the top-ranked USC Trojans 41-38 in the Rose Bowl for the BCS national championship. Alongside the national titles, the Longhorns have won 34 conference championships across three conferences, including a record 27 Southwest Conference championships.

Which Texas Longhorns Football players have won the Heisman Trophy?

Two Texas Longhorns Football players have won the Heisman Trophy: Earl Campbell in 1977 and Ricky Williams in 1998, both running backs. Williams made 1998 a clean sweep, adding the Maxwell Award and a second straight Doak Walker Award to his Heisman. The individual trophy case runs deeper still:
  • Tommy Nobis: won the Maxwell Award in 1965.
  • Vince Young: won the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien Award during the 2005 championship season.
  • Colt McCoy: won the Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards in 2009.
  • Doak Walker Award: Longhorns running backs have won it five times, with Ricky Williams (1997 and 1998), Cedric Benson (2004), D'Onta Foreman (2016), and Bijan Robinson (2022) all honored.
Six Texas jersey numbers are retired, and 17 Longhorns players and coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Who is the biggest rival of the Texas Longhorns Football?

The Oklahoma Sooners Football are the biggest rival of the Texas Longhorns Football. Known as the Red River Rivalry, the series dates to 1900, when Oklahoma was still a U.S. territory, and it stands as the longest-running college football rivalry played at a neutral site, with the teams meeting annually at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas. The venue splits at the 50-yard line, Texas flags over the Longhorn side and Oklahoma flags over the Sooner side, and the programs are usually ranked when they meet; in 1963, No. 2 Texas beat No. 1 Oklahoma 28-7 on the way to the program's first national championship. The Texas A&M Aggies Football are the other fixture on the rivalry calendar, an in-state series that began in 1894, traditionally landed on Thanksgiving weekend, and returned in 2024 once both schools shared a conference again. The Arkansas Razorbacks Football round out the card, an old Southwest Conference matchup best remembered for the 1969 Game of the Century, when Texas rallied past the second-ranked Razorbacks 15-14.

What traditions define Texas Longhorns Football?

Texas Longhorns Football is defined by a deep bench of game-day pageantry, headlined by Bevo the live longhorn steer, the Hook 'em Horns hand signal, and The Eyes of Texas. The full lineup:
  • Bevo: a live Texas longhorn steer who appears at games, carrying a name that dates to the early 1900s.
  • Hook 'em Horns: the hand signal introduced at a pep rally in 1955, flashed by tens of thousands of fans at once and once featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
  • The Eyes of Texas: the school song, sung to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad."
  • Smokey the Cannon: fired at every kickoff and after every Texas score.
  • Big Bertha: the Longhorn Band's bass drum, billed as the largest in the world, played by the Showband of the Southwest.
  • The World's Largest Texas Flag: run across the field before home games.
  • The UT Tower: lit burnt orange after victories, with a number 1 displayed across its windows for national championships.
Put it all together and a Longhorns home game feels less like an event and more like a statewide ritual.
