Formed in 1989, the band originally had the lineup of Scott Weiland (vocals), Robert DeLeo (bass), Dean DeLeo (guitar), and Eric Kretz (drums). Stone Temple Pilots is often known by its nickname, STP. The band formed as Mighty Joe Young in 1984. They played several gigs throughout San Diego and quickly built a fanbase. The band's management was notified that the Mighty Joe Young name was already claimed by a blues musician, so they changed the name to Stone Temple Pilots.
