One of the most-hailed bands in the history of shoegaze, a type of indie and alternative rock that first became popular in the late '80s in the United Kingdom, Slowdive has been through an amazing journey since its start in 1989. Although its members parted ways in 1995, the strength of their catalog meant that they found new fans long after their dissolution. When they got back together in 2014, it was like an indie homecoming. Slowdive live shows continue to demonstrate just how much power the band has.Take a Dive
Childhood friends Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead started Slowdive in Reading, England. Slowdive was formed in the wake of a previous project, The Pumpkin Fairies, the drummer of which, Adrian Sell, also drummed for Slowdive. The band's demo garned considerable attention, and it joined Creation Records. However, Sell opted to leave the band. Wider recognition grew with the release of its eponymous EP. A few years later, the band found a longer-lasting drummer in Simon Scott. More EPs came out to strong notices. Slowdive's first album, Just for a Day, did generally well. However, a major moment happened with the second album, Souvlaki, as the band got to collaborate with music legend Brian Eno. After its third album, Pygmalion, Creation dropped Slowdive and the group disbanded. The members kept making music in groups, including Mojave 3, which featured Goswell, Halstead and the then-most-recent drummer, Ian McCutcheon. In 2014, Slowdive's members came back together. After a reunion at the Primavera Sound festival as well as NOS Primavera Sound, they embarked on a tour. Stops included the FYF Fest in Los Angeles, Calif., as well as the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, Ill. Slowdive also came out with its fourth album, Slowdive, released through Dead Oceans. This was greeted with rapturous acclaim from music critics, who found it lived up to the band's reputation as shoegaze and dream pop legends. Although Slowdive got some mixed reception in its first run, the band has been recognized as one of the best acts of its era and as important as other major shoegaze groups such as My Bloody Valentine and Ride.Where can I buy Slowdive tickets?
