About Savannah Bananas

The Savannah Bananas turned baseball inside out. Founded in 2016 in Savannah, Georgia, the team started as a collegiate summer club in the Coastal Plain League before creating Banana Ball, a modified version of the sport built around showmanship, fan participation, and faster games. Players perform dance routines, comedic sketches, and choreographed bits between and during innings, blending competitive baseball with live entertainment in a way nobody else in the sport has attempted at this scale.

The Bananas won three Petitt Cup championships in the Coastal Plain League (2016, 2021, and 2022) before folding their collegiate team after the 2022 season to go all-in on Banana Ball as a barnstorming exhibition team. Their touring opponent, the Party Animals, debuted in 2020, creating a competitive rivalry that plays out across the country. Unlike the Harlem Globetrotters model that inspired the format, Banana Ball games are unscripted and genuinely competitive. The team's home ballpark is Grayson Stadium in Savannah, but their Banana Ball World Tour has taken them to MLB stadiums like Fenway Park, Nationals Park, Minute Maid Park, Citizens Bank Park, and Progressive Field, plus NFL venues like Raymond James Stadium.

What started as a creative experiment at a minor league park has become one of the biggest live entertainment stories in American sports. The Bananas have drawn crowds of 65,000 at Raymond James Stadium, 81,000 at Clemson's Memorial Stadium, and 102,000 at Kyle Field. Their 2023 World Tour drew over 500,000 total fans across more than 80 games. Coverage from ESPN, Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal, and 60 Minutes has turned the franchise into a national conversation about what baseball can be when you build it around the fan experience first.

What is Banana Ball and how do the Savannah Bananas play it?

Banana Ball is a modified version of baseball created by the Savannah Bananas in 2018. The format emphasizes speed, entertainment, and fan interaction. Games move faster than traditional baseball, and players incorporate dance routines, comedic sketches, and choreographed performances between and during innings. The Bananas played their first official Banana Ball game in June 2020, and the format became the team's full-time identity after they left the Coastal Plain League following the 2022 season. Every Savannah Bananas game is now played under Banana Ball rules, whether at Grayson Stadium in Savannah or at stadiums across the country on their annual World Tour.

What are some notable achievements of the Savannah Bananas?

The Savannah Bananas have built one of the most remarkable track records in modern sports entertainment.
  • Won three Petitt Cup championships in the Coastal Plain League (2016, 2021, 2022)
  • Named Coastal Plain League Organization of the Year in 2016 and 2017
  • Accumulated over twelve million TikTok followers, surpassing MLB's official account
  • Featured on ESPN, Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal, CNN 10, and 60 Minutes
  • Drew 102,000 fans to a single game at Kyle Field, the largest crowd in Banana Ball history
  • Expanded from local exhibition games to playing in MLB and NFL stadiums across the country
  • Produced multiple MLB alumni, including Braden Shewmake, Cade Marlowe, and Brett Wisely

Who are some notable Savannah Bananas players?

The Savannah Bananas roster blends entertainment with real baseball talent. Dakota Albritton, known as "Stilts," plays the field, bats, and pitches while standing 10 feet, 9 inches tall on stilts. Jocelyn Alo became the first woman to play for the Bananas in 2023, signing a one-month contract in 2024. Kelsie Whitmore, one of the highest-profile professional women baseball players, joined the team in August 2025. Several former Savannah Bananas players from the Coastal Plain League era have gone on to reach Major League Baseball, including Braden Shewmake (Atlanta Braves, 2019 first-round draft pick), Beau Sulser (Pittsburgh Pirates), Cade Marlowe (Seattle Mariners), and Hayden Harris, who became the first player from the Banana Ball era to reach the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 2025.

What is the Savannah Bananas fan experience like?

The Savannah Bananas have built a fan culture unlike anything else in baseball. The energy at a Banana Ball game sits closer to a concert or comedy show than a traditional sporting event, with the crowd as much a part of the performance as the players on the field. Fan participation is woven into the format itself, and the atmosphere stays high from first pitch to final out. The team's social media presence has helped create a community that extends far beyond Savannah, with over twelve million TikTok followers engaging with viral clips of dance routines, trick plays, and crowd interactions. Whether at Grayson Stadium or a sold-out NFL venue, Savannah Bananas fans bring a level of enthusiasm that reflects the team's core philosophy: fans come first.
