San Diego Padres in Los Angeles tickets

San Diego belongs to the Padres. Since the Chargers relocated to Los Angeles in 2017, the Padres have stood as the city's only franchise in the four major American professional sports leagues, and that solo status shapes gameday at Petco Park, the downtown ballpark the club has called home since 2004. National League West baseball comes wrapped in the franchise's signature brown and gold, a look the Padres restored in 2020 that instantly sets the place apart. Few tickets in baseball feel more like a postcard than a summer night at this ballpark.

The Padres entered Major League Baseball in 1969 as one of four expansion franchises, carrying a name borrowed from San Diego's Pacific Coast League club and honoring the Franciscan friars who founded Mission San Diego de Alcalá in 1769. The early years tested that loyalty: six straight last-place finishes in the NL West, including four seasons of 100 or more losses. The climb made the highs hit harder. San Diego won its first National League pennant in 1984 under manager Dick Williams, then claimed another in 1998, though the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees ended those World Series runs in five games and a sweep. Along the way, the franchise assembled one of baseball's most beloved collections of talent: Tony Gwynn spent all 20 of his big-league seasons in San Diego and won a National League record eight batting titles, Trevor Hoffman retired in 2010 as MLB's all-time saves leader with 601, Randy Jones won the club's first Cy Young Award in 1976, and Dave Winfield played his first eight seasons in brown and gold before becoming the first Hall of Famer to wear a Padres cap on his plaque. The franchise's first no-hiter didn't arrive until April 2021, when Joe Musgrove ended the longest no-hit drought in MLB history.

Padres fans wear the identity proudly, and no mascot fits its city better than the Swinging Friar, the bat-swinging, bell-ringing nod to the friars behind the team's name and a fixture since the franchise's minor league days. San Diego's military roots run through the gameday experience, too. The Padres became the first national sports team to hold an annual military appreciation event in 1996, camouflage jerseys are a Sunday home tradition, and Marine recruits regularly fill entire sections of the upper deck, honored with a Fourth Inning Stretch set to the Marines' Hymn. The club even earned a permanent nickname in August 2020, when the Padres became the first team in MLB history to hit grand slams in four consecutive games: Slam Diego.
