  Although born in Zambia, Sampa Tembo emigrated to Australia as a young adult. It was whilst living in Sydney that she made her musical breakthrough with her first release, "The Great Mixtape". Despite not having a huge marketing campaign, it was a critical success and many of the tracks such as "Black Dignity" received airtime on radio stations across the world. Her follow-up mixtape, "Birds and the BEE9", was even more successful and won her the Australian Music Prize in 2018.
