About Oasis

are an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. The original lineup featured lead vocalist Liam Gallagher, guitarist Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, bassist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan, and drummer Tony McCarroll, with Liam's older brother Noel Gallagher joining a few months later on lead guitar and vocals. Noel became the band's primary songwriter and built their early sound on a stripped-back approach: barre chords, root bass notes, and amplifiers turned up for distortion. Drawing on 1960s British rock like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Who, along with the raw edge of Sex Pistols, the band traded polish for volume and attitude.

The band signed to Creation Records in 1993 and released their debut album, Definitely Maybe, in 1994. It topped the UK Albums Chart and, at the time, became the fastest-selling debut album in British history. The 1995 follow-up, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, helped define the Britpop era, spent ten weeks at number one in the UK, and went on to sell tens of millions of copies worldwide. Their mid-1990s peak brought record-setting shows at London's Earls Court and Knebworth, and headline dates at Maine Road, then the home of Manchester City. Later albums, including Heathen Chemistry (2002), Don't Believe the Truth (2005), and Dig Out Your Soul (2008), all reached number one in the UK. After a hiatus that began in 2009, reformed in 2024 and returned to touring.

are widely considered the most successful group of the Britpop era and one of the most influential rock bands to come out of Britain. They have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and their catalog has been cited as an influence by acts across multiple generations. Live, the band turns its biggest songs into mass singalongs, with crowds at stadiums and festivals carrying choruses of Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger well past the final note.

Former members include bassist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan and drummers Tony McCarroll and Alan White. Archer and Bell joined in 1999 after founding members Arthurs and McGuigan departed, and Arthurs returned when the band reformed in 2024.

What is fan culture like?

fans treat the band's biggest songs as communal anthems, and that energy is loudest at live shows. A defining moment came in August 1996, when two nights at Knebworth drew 125,000 people each; 2.5 million people applied for tickets, and the shows remain among the largest concert events in British history. The atmosphere is unified and singalong-driven, with crowds often taking over the choruses of Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger. The band's 2024 reunion brought a new generation into that following, and the 2024 reunion tour drew large, cross-generational crowds.
