Hamilton is a sung-and-rapped-through biographical musical with music, lyrics, and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Based on Ron Chernow's 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton, the show traces the life of the American Founding Father from his arrival in New York City through the American Revolution, his role as the first Secretary of the Treasury, and the political rivalries that defined the early republic. The score draws from hip hop, R&B, pop, soul, and traditional show tunes, and the production casts actors of color as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Miranda described the show as "America then, as told by America now."

Hamilton premiered off-Broadway at The Public Theater on February 17, 2015, where its entire engagement sold out. It transferred to the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway, opening on August 6, 2015, to uniformly positive reviews and record-setting box office numbers. The show set a Broadway record in late November 2016 when it grossed $3.3 million in a single eight-performance week. Multiple productions have followed, including a Chicago run at the CIBC Theatre that grossed $400 million and drew over 2.6 million theatergoers, a West End production at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London, and several North American touring companies. A filmed version of the original Broadway cast was released on Disney+ in 2020.

The show is directed by Thomas Kail and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, with the original Broadway cast featuring Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Renee Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, and Jonathan Groff as King George III. The production's turntable staging, period costumes, and high-energy choreography create an experience that is simultaneously historical and contemporary.
