He majored in political science at the University of Montreal. Even after four years of study, however, he never graduated. He immediately moved to Paris to study the Dramatic Arts in 1992. In 1994, Elmaleh performed his first one-man show, Décalages, at the Palais des Glaces. During the two-hour show, Elmaleh retraced his travels from his birth in Morocco until his journey to France.
