Based out of Baltimore, Maryland, synthpop band Future Islands got its start in 2006, with its first album, Wave Like Hone, released in 2008. It was its fourth album, Singles, that earned it a place on the Billboard Hot 200 at No. 40, with its fifth album, The Far Field, reaching No. 52. Future Islands single "Seasons (Waiting on You)" from its Singles album was chosen as the Best Song of 2015 by Pitchfork and NME; Future Islands' performance of "Seasons (Waiting on You)" on The Late Show with David Letterman was so popular it became the most-viewed video on YouTube for the show in 2014. Future Islands: The Artists Formally Known as Art Lord & the Self-Portraits
The seeds for Future Island were planted in 2003, several years before Future Islands would actually be formed. It began with childhood friends Sam Herring and Gerrit Welmers taking an interest in music but never choosing to create any together. That is until Herring took an art course where he met William Cashion, and they decided to form a band; Herring then invited Welmers to join them. They rounded out the group with Adam Beeby and Kymia Nawabi. They named this band Art Lord & the Self-Portraits and gained quite a few local followers. As with many bands formed when people are young, some members left to pursue college and other dreams. It ended up disbanding until Cashion, Herring and Welmers realized they had already committed to a tour with another band, so they formed Future Islands to meet this commitment and added in Erick Murillo, who played an electronic drum kit.
