Grand Prix auto racing in Montreal: history
Grand Prix racing has been a staple in Canada since 1961 when the event was held in conjunction with the Canadian Sports Car Championship at the famous Mosport Park circuit in Ontario. Though not officially part of the Formula One calendar, it was nevertheless popular with racing drivers of all stripes because of its challenging layout and, along with the track at Mont-Tremblant in Quebec, would be chosen as hosts when F1 officially came to Canada in 1967. Formula 1 Grand Prix of Montreal joins Formula One British Grand Prix, Australia Grand Prix and Austria Grand Prix as other F1 races. The inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix of Montreal title was won by Australian Jack Brabham who would be crowned World Champion three times before his retirement from the sport. Over the years, this race would provide some of the most thrilling finishes the sport has ever seen such as the memorable battle between British driver Jackie Stewart and Belgian Jackie Ickx in the 1969 edition that saw Ickx take the chequered flag despite a collision between the two rivals. Join the thousands at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
Over the years as technology created increasingly faster cars, the Mosport Park circuit was found to be too dangerous for drivers as several serious accidents plagued the venue. Accordingly, a new site was considered and a purpose-built circuit was created on the man-made island of Ile Notre Dame which came into use for the 1978 race and has been held there ever since. The first winner there was local hero Jacques Villeneuve of the Ferrari team. When Villenueve was killed during the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix the circuit at Ile Notre Dame was renamed in his honour. Formula 1 Grand Prix of Montreal would become the premiere racing event in North America for several years as the sport failed to find continued traction in the United States, Argentina and Mexico and would be the site where Ferrari and F1 legend Michael Schumacher would win seven of his record 91 Grand Prix titles between 1994 and 2004. Join the thousands at Circuit Jacques Villenueve as the fastest cars in the world compete for F1 glory. Formula 1 Grand Prix of Montreal tickets are ready now for purchase or sale via StubHub.
