What is Coachella?
Coachella is a music festival that hosts artists and performers of different genres at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif., and was founded by Paul Tollet and Rick Van Santen in 1999 to showcase established artists who are popular in the mainstream along with up-and-coming musicians and reunited artists. The concept for the music festival began in 1997 when Tollet was inspired to draw crowds by bringing numerous artists together in one venue rather than taking the more competitive route of booking individual concerts. Ever since its first appearance in 1999, Coachella has been a huge success with dozens of live concert performances and continues to draw in visitors from around the world.
Coachella History and Accolades
Paul Tollett had the idea to gather a group of moderately known artists into a single venue and build up from there. The Indio City Council gave Tollet and Van Santen approval and provided support in the form of $90,000 for public safety and traffic control. This framework allowed the partners to start the first Coachella Music Festival. In 1993, Pearl Jam performed at the festival where 25,000 fans visited, marking them as the first group to play at the club. This established the venue's viability to host large events. Six years later, Tollet and Van Santen formed the first Coachella event in October 1999, spanning two days. No event occurred in 2000, and Coachella resumed performance events in 2001. The festival went on to earn numerous awards, including the Top Festival Award from 2011 to 2017 via the Billing Touring Awards. Since its inception, the popularity of this festival has grown tremendously, and fans and artists from around the world flock to Indio every spring to see all the exciting Coachella concerts.
