About BIGBANG

Few groups in pop music carry a title like the Kings of K-pop, and BIGBANG earned it. Formed in Seoul by YG Entertainment, the group made their official debut on August 19, 2006, at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena during the label's tenth-anniversary family concert, with their formation documented on a television series that drew more than a million views online. BIGBANG built their sound on hip hop, R&B, dance, and electronic music, and they wrote and produced much of it themselves, with leader G Dragon steering the creative direction from the very beginning. That self-produced, trendsetting approach helped carry the Korean Wave far beyond Asia and made BIGBANG one of the most influential acts in K-pop history.

The breakout came fast. After a modest debut album, the 2007 single Lies topped Korean music charts for a record-breaking six consecutive weeks on its way to Song of the Year honors, opening the door for era-defining hits like Last Farewell, Haru Haru, and Sunset Glow. In 2012, their EP Alive became the first Korean album to chart on the US Billboard 200, and the Made era brought a third Artist of the Year win at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2015. All told, BIGBANG has landed eleven number-one singles on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart, sold more than 140 million records worldwide, and became the first Korean act featured on the Forbes Celebrity 100 in 2016. After group activity paused for mandatory military service, the 2022 comeback single Still Life debuted at number one, setting a chart record for any group, and BIGBANG has carried on since 2023 as a trio of G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung. In 2026, the trio marked two decades of BIGBANG with the single BiiiG and the launch of the XX: Cosmos World Tour.

Onstage, BIGBANG assembled one of the great touring resumes in Korean music. The Made World Tour drew 1.5 million fans and set the record for the most-attended concert tour by a Korean act at the time, while annual runs through Japan's dome arenas brought crowds in the hundreds of thousands. Their tenth-anniversary concert at Seoul World Cup Stadium drew 65,000 fans, the largest audience ever for a single headlining act in the country. Critics took notice too: the Los Angeles Times called the Made tour's Anaheim stop an incredibly significant moment for K-pop, and The New York Times ranked their Newark show second on its best concerts of 2012 list. A BIGBANG show pairs arena-scale production with a catalog that spans early electro-rap anthems and generation-defining singalongs, and demand for BIGBANG tickets has run hot ever since their 2007 BigBang Is Great concert sold out in ten minutes.

Who are the members of BIGBANG?

BIGBANG debuted as a five-member group and has performed as a trio since 2023. G-Dragon is the leader and a rapper who wrote and produced much of the group's catalog, including Lies, Last Farewell, and Haru Haru, alongside a decorated solo career. Taeyang is a vocalist with deep R&B roots, heard on his solo EP Hot. Daesung completes the lineup as a vocalist. The founding lineup also included rapper T.O.P, who departed in 2023, and vocalist Seungri, who left the entertainment industry in 2019. Members have also branched out through the sub-units GD & TOP and GD X Taeyang, along with a steady run of solo releases.

What are BIGBANG's most popular songs?

BIGBANG's catalog spans two decades of K-pop history, from the 2007 breakout to the 2022 comeback.
  • Lies (2007): six straight weeks at number one in South Korea and Song of the Year honors, later named Song of the Decade by Mnet's M! Countdown
  • Haru Haru (2008): seven weeks at number one and more than five million digital downloads in South Korea alone
  • Fantastic Baby (2012): the first music video by a K-pop group to pass 300 million YouTube views
  • Bang Bang Bang (2015): Song of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards and the best-performing single of 2015 in South Korea
  • Loser and Bae Bae (2015): debuted at number one and two on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart, a first for a K-pop boy band
  • Still Life (2022): an eleventh number-one single in South Korea, a record for any group on the Gaon Digital Chart
Concert staples like Last Farewell, Sunset Glow, Tonight, and Bad Boy keep BIGBANG setlists deep across every era of the group's run.

What awards has BIGBANG won?

BIGBANG's trophy case runs from Korean grand prizes to international firsts for a K-pop act.
  • First artist ever to win more than one Artist of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, taking the honor in 2008, 2012, and 2015
  • Inaugural winner of Best Worldwide Act at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards
  • Best Artist from the World at the 2016 MTV Italian Music Awards, the first and only Korean act to win
  • Song of the Year wins for Lies (2007) and Bang Bang Bang (2015) at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, plus Loser at the Golden Disc Awards and Bae Bae at the Korean Music Awards
  • Japan Record Awards recognition, including Song of the Year for Tell Me Goodbye in 2010
  • First Korean act featured on the Forbes Celebrity 100 (2016) and the Forbes 30 Under 30 list of most influential musicians (2017)
Forbes Korea also ranked BIGBANG among the country's most powerful celebrities every year from 2009 to 2016.

What are BIGBANG fans called?

BIGBANG's fan base goes by V.I.P, a name that echoes their 2006 single BigBang Is V.I.P. V.I.Ps have a reputation as one of the most powerful fan communities in music: they cast more than 58 million votes to win BIGBANG the inaugural Best Worldwide Act award at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, and the fandom later took home a Best Fan award at Italy's TRL Awards. The bond runs both ways. BIGBANG has staged dedicated fan meeting tours like the Fantastic Babys series and the Made V.I.P Tour, and marked their tenth anniversary with A TO Z, an art exhibition in Seoul and Taipei celebrating a decade of history with their fans. Between the voting records and the ten-minute sellouts, a BIGBANG crowd is one of the most engaged in all of pop.
