Ben Folds is a singer-songwriter and record producer who has toured as a solo artist and as the lead singer in the band Ben Folds Five. His music can be described in many ways as it transcends some traditional ideas of what songs should be. He combines alternative rock with jazz fusion, some power pop and cabaret. Most of his work heavily features his piano playing, which lends to a unique live music experience.
A True Musician
Ben Folds was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was introduced to the piano at age 9, at which time he listened to songs on the radio and trained himself to play them by ear. In high school, he was a member of several bands, taking on vocals, piano, bass guitar and/or drums. After touring around locally and self-producing songs, Folds got a deal to move to Nashville and play the drums. This introduced him to the life of a professional musician, and he continued to further his skills on percussion and piano. For a time, he acted in theater in New York City, but he soon realized that music was his calling. In 1994, he formed the band Ben Folds Five along with Robert Sledge and Darren Jessee. They started releasing songs in 1995, gaining fame with "Brick," "Army" and "Battle of Who Could Care Less." As a solo artist, he released Rockin' the Suburbs in 2001, playing almost all the instruments on the tracks, in addition to two other albums and several EPs. His other work has included songs on soundtracks and live recordings.
