Born Andrew Fetterly Wilkes-Krier, Andrew W.K. got his start in music early. At age 4, he began to train in classical piano, and by the time he was a teenager, he was studying jazz keyboard in an alternative high school. He also participated in an impressive array of early punk and metal bands, including Reverse Polarity, the Pterodactyls and Lab Lobotomy. As he grew older, he also began work on independent projects, such as Ancient Art of Boar.
After turning down an acceptance to the Art Institute of Chicago, Andrew W.K. moved to New York City to pursue an independent music career. In 1998, he released a cassette single, "Room to Breathe," as well as some other projects that eventually attracted the attention of Bulb Records. Andrew W.K. signed to their label and went on to release his debut EP, Girls Own Juice, in 2000. His debut full-length album, I Get Wet, which features viral cover art picturing Andrew W.K. with blood running over his mouth and chin, followed one year later. The album rose to No. 84 on the Billboard 200.
In 2003, Andrew W.K. released his sophomore album, The Wolf, which rocketed to No. 61 on the Billboard 200 and further expanded his following.
Andrew W.K.'s other projects
Although he remains best-known for his high-energy alternative music, Andrew W.K. has kept himself busy with a variety of pursuits both within and beyond the music world. Starting in 2005, the musician began a New Age motivational speaking tour, discussing self-help on stages at venues as prestigious as Yale, Carnegie Mellon and New York University.
In 2008, he opened a music venue and nightclub, Santos Party House, in downtown Manhattan. It won numerous awards in just the first year, including the People's Choice Award for Best Night Club.
In 2015, the musician announced his own radio show on The Blaze Radio Network. The two-hour Saturday program focuses on meaning, motivation and mindset. Andrew W.K. has also written books and advice columns, in addition to appearing in a broad range of movies and TV shows.
