About Usher

Usher Raymond IV was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 14, 1978, and spent most of his childhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the local church youth choir handed him his first taste of performing at age nine. His family moved to Atlanta so he could chase bigger opportunities, and his mother, Jonnetta Patton, left her job as a medical technician to manage a career that took off fast. A Star Search appearance set up an audition with LaFace Records co-founder L.A. Reid, who signed Usher on the spot after hearing him sing Boyz II Men's "End of the Road". By age 15 he had his self-titled debut album in stores.

The breakthrough arrived with My Way in 1997, co-written and produced with Jermaine Dupri. The album delivered Usher's first US number one single, "Nice & Slow", on its way to a seven-times-platinum certification, and the 2001 follow-up, 8701, produced two more chart-toppers in "U Remind Me" and "U Got It Bad". Then came Confessions in 2004, which opened with the biggest first-week sales ever scanned by a male R&B artist and went on to sell more than 20 million copies worldwide, earn a Diamond certification from the RIAA, and become the best-selling album by a Black artist of the 21st century. Riding four consecutive number one singles, from "Yeah!" and "Burn" to "Confessions Part II" and the Alicia Keys duet "My Boo", Usher closed the decade as Billboard's number one Hot 100 artist of the 2000s.

The reinvention never stopped. Here I Stand (2008) added another chart-topper with "Love in This Club", Raymond v. Raymond (2010) delivered "OMG", the single that made him one of only a few artists ever to reach number one in three consecutive decades, and Looking 4 Myself (2012), Hard II Love (2016), and Coming Home (2024) kept the catalog current, with Coming Home arriving the same day his Super Bowl LVIII halftime show drew 123 million viewers in the US. Demand stayed loud, too. The 2024 Past Present Future tour grew from 24 planned dates to 58, and Las Vegas residencies at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace and Dolby Live at Park MGM, plus the Rendez-Vous À Paris run in 2023, kept him on stage year-round. With more than 100 million records sold worldwide and a stage pedigree that moved James Brown to crown him the "Godson of Soul", Usher tickets put fans in front of one of the great showmen of his era.

Who is Usher?

Usher, born Usher Raymond IV in 1978, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor who rose out of Atlanta's R&B scene to sell more than 100 million records worldwide. His sound blends R&B, pop, hip-hop, and soul, carried by a velvety tenor that spans more than three octaves. Away from the microphone he has starred in films like The Faculty, She's All That, and Hands of Stone, played Billy Flynn in the Broadway revival of Chicago in 2006, coached on The Voice (2013 to 2014) and won season 6, co-founded RBMG with Scooter Braun in 2008 to help launch Justin Bieber, and held a minority stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers that came with a 2016 NBA championship. His nonprofit, Usher's New Look, was founded in 1999 to mentor young people through education and real-world experience. For anyone weighing Usher tickets, the short version is this: he is one of the most complete live performers R&B has produced.

What are Usher's most popular songs?

Usher's catalog stacks Hot 100 number ones across three decades, from late-90s slow jams to 2010s dance-pop. The essentials:
  • "Nice & Slow" (1998), his first US number one
  • "You Make Me Wanna...", the My Way single that hit number one in the UK
  • "U Remind Me" and "U Got It Bad", the 8701 singles that spent four and six weeks at number one
  • "U Don't Have to Call", the 2003 Grammy winner that made Usher one of only three artists, alongside Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder, to take Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in consecutive years
  • "Yeah!" (with Lil Jon and Ludacris), ranked by Billboard among the greatest Hot 100 songs of all time
  • "Burn" and "Confessions Part II", the singles that kept Usher atop the chart through most of 2004
  • "My Boo", the Alicia Keys duet that capped four straight number ones from Confessions
  • "Love in This Club", the 2008 chart-topper from Here I Stand
  • "OMG" featuring William, which extended his run of number ones into a third decade
  • "Climax", the 2013 single that won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance

What awards has Usher won?

Usher ranks among the most decorated R&B artists of his generation, with major hardware from the Grammys, the Billboard Music Awards, the Soul Train Music Awards, the American Music Awards, and the BET Awards. The headline honors:
  • 8 Grammy Awards, including back-to-back Best Male R&B Vocal Performance wins for "U Remind Me" and "U Don't Have to Call" and a three-win night in 2005 for "Yeah!", "My Boo", and Confessions
  • 18 Billboard Music Awards, highlighted by an 11-trophy sweep in 2004 that included Artist of the Year
  • 12 Soul Train Music Awards
  • 8 American Music Awards
  • 7 BET Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024
  • A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since 2016 and a spot in the inaugural 2021 class of the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame

What is Usher's fan culture like?

Usher's fan community is a multi-generational crowd, from listeners who wore out My Way in 1997 to newer fans who arrived through the artists he influenced, a list that runs from Chris Brown and Trey Songz to Justin Bieber and Jungkook of BTS. Ne-Yo described the debt a generation of R&B singers owes him when he said that without Usher there would be no him, no Chris Brown, and no Trey Songz. The community has its own shared lore, too. His 2022 NPR Tiny Desk set produced the hushed "watch this" that became an internet meme, and Usher has spent his career folding fans into the show itself, from serenading audience members mid-performance to disguising himself as a street performer in 2015 to surprise one of his biggest British fans in person. Las Vegas residencies at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace and Dolby Live at Park MGM gave the fanbase a home base, and the Rendez-Vous À Paris run at La Seine Musicale in 2023 took the residency era international. He has pitched his live shows as ever-changing experiences full of surprises and special guests, and the fans who follow him from era to era treat those unscripted moments as the point of the whole thing.
