Tyler Childers was born Timothy Tyler Childers on June 21, 1991, in Lawrence County, Kentucky, and raised in Louisa, where his father worked in the coal industry. He learned to sing in a church choir, picked up guitar and started writing songs around age 13, and came out of the same eastern Kentucky country music tradition that produced Chris Stapleton, Loretta Lynn, and Crystal Gayle. After short stints at Western Kentucky University and Bluegrass Community and Technical College, he left school, worked odd jobs, and started playing shows around Lexington, Kentucky, and Huntington, West Virginia.
He self-released his first album, Bottles and Bibles, in 2011 at age 19, and built a grassroots following with EPs recorded for Lexington's Red Barn Radio. The breakthrough came with Purgatory in 2017, produced by fellow Kentuckian Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson. The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and landed on multiple best-of-2017 lists. What followed was one of the more productive runs in country music: Country Squire (2019), the fiddle-driven Long Violent History (2020), and the triple album Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? (2022), which reached No. 8 on the Billboard 200, giving him his first top 10 album on that chart. Rustin' in the Rain arrived in 2023, and Snipe Hunter (2025), his seventh studio album, folded Appalachian music, experimental rock, psychedelia, and gospel into his sound.
Childers' music sits at the crossroads of neotraditional country, bluegrass, folk, and honky-tonk, and his songwriting is inseparable from Kentucky. He treats songs like short stories, often centering coal mining and the lives built around it, and "In Your Love" (2023) became his first top 10 hit on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. He performs with his longtime backing band, The Food Stamps, and his shows have scaled up from the club rooms of Lexington and Huntington to festival main stages, including a headlining set at Bourbon & Beyond in Louisville.
