The Wizard of Oz at Sphere gives MGM's 1939 musical fantasy classic Wizard of Oz a Las Vegas-scale reimagining, rebuilding the film as an immersive 4D experience for the 160,000-square-foot 16K screen inside Sphere in the Las Vegas Valley. It began screening on August 28, 2025, the third film in the venue's Sphere Experience program, following Darren Aronofsky's 2023 documentary Postcard From Earth and the 2024 concert film V-U2 An Immersive Concert Film, which chronicled the U2 residency at the venue. The format gives longtime fans a way to step inside a film they know by heart.
The production was a heavyweight undertaking, reported at around $100 million. Sphere Entertainment and producer Jane Rosenthal led the project in collaboration with Google, Warner Bros., and visual effects studio Magnopus, and an estimated 1.2 petabytes of data were processed for the remaster, with AI upscaling the 1939 footage and generating imagery that extends shots beyond the original frame. The entire score was re-recorded by an 80-piece orchestra under composer David Newman on the same scoring stage where it was originally recorded, preserving Herbert Stothart's original 1939 Academy Award-winning compositions. The edit runs a tight 75 minutes, trimmed from the original 101, with multi-sensory effects layered throughout.
The experience works the whole room. During the tornado sequence, wind, fog, and leaves sweep the auditorium with the audience placed inside the funnel. Butterflies cross the theater in the first Oz scenes, foam apples drop during the run-in with the angry Apple Tree, snow falls as Glinda lifts the spell on the poison poppies, pyrotechnics flare in the Wizard's throne room, and life-size flying monkeys take flight over the crowd on drones. The screening comes wrapped in its own world: a sepia-toned Kansas atrium before the show, with replicas of Professor Marvel's cart and the Wizard's hot air balloon alongside prints from L. Frank Baum's original Oz books and ruby slippers from Debbie Reynolds' personal collection, and a Technicolor Emerald City atrium afterward, where guests interact with a life-size replica of the Wizard's throne room. The response matched the production's scale: by mid-2026, more than 3 million tickets had been sold.
