The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971, and they rank among the most successful musical acts of the 1970s in North America, with five number-one singles and six number-one albums to their name. Founding members Glenn Frey (guitar, vocals), Don Henley (drums, vocals), Bernie Leadon (guitar, vocals), and Randy Meisner (bass, vocals) first played together in Linda Ronstadt's backing band and appeared on her 1972 self-titled album before signing with David Geffen's new Asylum Records label. Their early sound wove rock, country, and folk into what listeners came to call California rock, anchored by the high, seamless harmonies that became the band's calling card.
The breakthrough came almost immediately. Their 1972 debut album, Eagles, delivered three Top 40 singles, including Take It Easy and Witchy Woman, and 1975's One of These Nights became their first number-one album while making them international stars. After Joe Walsh joined in 1975, the band sharpened its rock edge on Hotel California, the 1976 landmark that sold more than 32 million copies worldwide and sent its title track to the top of the charts. Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) has moved 40 million copies in the US, making it the best-selling album in the country. The Eagles broke up in 1980, returned in 1994 with Hell Freezes Over, a reunion album that debuted at number one on the Billboard chart, and kept the run going with Long Road Out of Eden in 2007, their sixth number-one album in the US.
An Eagles show runs on the strength of the catalog. The band's reunion tours after 1994 became known for record-setting ticket prices, the 2013 History of the Eagles documentary launched a world tour that ran into 2015, and in 2019 the band played Hotel California in its entirety at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with a 46-piece orchestra and a 22-voice choir behind them. In 2023 they announced The Long Goodbye, a farewell tour that opened at Madison Square Garden in New York, and in 2024 they began a residency at Sphere in the Las Vegas Valley, where the first eight concerts drew 131,000 fans. Across their career the Eagles have sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 100 million in the US alone, and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
